Hey all,
I have a few questions. I want to build a pergola on my south facing terrace in hardiness zone 9b Athens, Greece. I am not there for a part of the year and might be renting it out.
So I would like to have an automatic irrigation and I would like plants that are drought tolerant and not high maintenance. I also would like something that would live long.

I would like to plant one of the walls with pots of capers and then I thought, would it be possible to drape them from above and let them shade the pergola as well?
I read that actually, they don't require any watering at all (they grow by themselves in cracks around town) Is it true and are there any other plants that does not require any irrigation?

Other plants I thought of are dragon fruit (thought about draping a few from above to get them to fill the pergola faster.
I thought about Clematis Montana and or other Clematis as well maybe combining them with Honeysuckles. thing is that I never seen any Clematis around in Greece so I'm not sure they grow well here.
Passion fruit would be perfect but I think they don't live that long...
Last is bugenvilija that I thought I can graft in different colors. They grow great here but it's my last choice...

Have you decided on a vine yet?
Your inquiry got me doing a bit of research...
All I previously knew about capers was that they grew wild on a small desert island.
Surprised me that you intended to grow them on a trellis...
Apparently similar in growth to a blackberry... People grow those on trellises...
Seems to be a bit of disagreement on what temps they will tolerate... but definitely gets too cold here at my house (some years).

I disbelieve that I'd want to water a desert plant... But, I also wouldn't leave it in a container...

As far as the other plants mentioned?
If I wasn't going to be there for part of the year... I'd want to plant something that was native to the area...
A plant that you hadn't seen in the area... would not be my first choice.
