I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, so forgive me if it's not.

I have a honeysuckle vine that I planted two years ago. I'm very sorry, but I do not know the name. The tag disappeared, but it's red and orange. I'm getting ready to move, and would like to take some cuttings off of it, but I'm not sure if that would work. I'd dig it up, but I'm afraid it might die.

Anyone know if I can root cuttings? Thanks for any help!

Layering is a good way to propagate honeysuckle.

I agree with Horntoad. If you have the time, go ahead and try layering. if not, they aren't too hard by cutting. I haven't read the article but i can tell you it will be best if you water the plant the night before and take the cuttings first thing in the morning while they have lots of water. Use clean, sharp bypass pruners. Hormone powder is helpful but not necessary for most Lonicera.

Dan & Jay, thanks for the info. I have no time for layering. We're moving really soon, probably in less than a month. It's only been in the ground a couple of years, so I could probably dig it up, but I'm afraid I'll kill it. I'd rather leave it than kill it. My problem is that we went on vacation out of state at the end of January, and loved the area we were in so much that we bought a house. Now I have to sell the house I'm at now. I sure wasn't planning on moving when I bought that honeysuckle, or any other plants that I have!

Odd. That site Jay gave has a picture for Lonicera sempervirens that looks nothing like the one I have...or any of that I've seen, for that matter. Good luck with propagation, Natalie! I haven't propagated any honeysuckle, but might try it one of these days, since it's supposed to be easy. I'm trying to use layering to propagate a St. John's Wort, no success so far.

I've had tremendous success with layering of Spirea. I've got several planted off the patio, and every winter, snow falls off the roof and squishes it. Every spring, I have new plants! That's the only thing I've ever started from layering, and it wasn't even me who did the work!

Thanks for that suggestion, Dan! I have a potted plant that needs some trimming back, so I thought I'd root a few cuttings while I'm at it. Watering the night before and then taking the cuttings first thing in the morning sounds like a really good plan! Unfortunately, my bypass pruners are neither clean nor sharp. Clean, I can fix. Sharp, not so much.

Dan, I was so worried about the Spirea after I saw it the first winter, with 4 or more feet of snow on it, but when I realized that I had many more plants growing the following Spring, it wasn't so bad after all!

Well, the honeysuckle didn't survive the trip. It got squished somewhere along the way. The two pots were upside down, and the honeysuckle was on the opposite side of the truck and dried out by the time I found it. I think the garden gnome that I stuck in the back with the plants was messing with me because the drive was taking too long! Oh well. I'll find one to replace it, so I'm not at all worried about it. At least the rest of the plants did fine. Now if I can figure out where to plant them, everything here in Idaho will be perfect!
