Has anyone bred or saved seeds of certain plants and found the offspring adapted better to conditions of your climate they usually would do poorly in?
I've been saving seed and growing Jewelweed for 4 years traced back from one single plant I collected. Normally this plant does poorly in heat and full sun.
Every year I planted seeds and when they sprouted I collected the largest seedling that looked healthiest growing in full sun to grow. After 4 years I now have Jewelweed plants that grow great in full sun with thicker stems, and even made it through New York's 2 month drought/heat wave.
To test this, I grew a collected wild seedling next to my own seedling, in the same size pots and soil type next to one another. The wild seedling died after a month into the drought, it's leaves yellowed and stem burnt. My plant remained green but halted flowering. Once it got cooler it's full of orange blooms.
