Dave, how old is your asparagus patch? Well-established plants can be difficult to dig up and re-plant, they get some massive roots on them. If you don't "have" to move your current patch immediately, it might be easier to just start from scratch in the new spot and then clean out the old patch once the new one is producing in 2-3 years.

Some years back we tried to move an established patch and very few of the plants survived... if you go that route, I hope you will have better luck than I did!

Hard, serious, deep digging. Have a wide, deep trench ready, with good compost at the bottom.
Dig widely around and deep underneath the existing roots. See where the fronds from this year were thickest, that's the center of each crown; go way around each one. Lift them out with as much dirt as possible, weeds, grass and all. Plop them into the new trench, cover, mulch and water. Add more mulch between now and winter.
