I lost about ten daylilies I put in last fall and about four Iris. I am very sad about this because most of the daylilies I lost were ones I purchased for hybridizing with. I guess I will just have to purchase more and try them again. I have never lost anything before so I will have to assume it was the strange winter we had this year.

One of the few daylilies that I've lost in 10 years, was Mort Morss. It was many years ago, it was rather new intro and I paid way more than anything I had ever bought and it bloomed that first summer and promptly rotted. I never replaced it. I had bought over 200 daylilies that year and I figured if it was the only one to die that winter, it probably would die again. So, I just said, oh well, and went on without it.

I have 2 plantings of MORT MORSS (it was a bogo from Maryotts) about 7 feet apart. One is thriving the other just kind of there. Not increasing not blooming as well not doing much of anything and I can't for the life of me figure out why. C'est la vie I guess

Mort Morss always comes back each year, but it always seems to start slowly and to have lost fans over the winter. It is not a good grower for me and I am now listed as zone 7 (formerly zone 6).

I almost bought Mort Morss but heard it was tender in my zone. I don't want to have to baby any daylilies.

I bought it ( or did I get it as a bonus, can't remember) last year. Will have to see how it does this year. Haven't taken an inventory of my daylily "losses" yet, but I do have a few that are struggling. I figured I would wait a few more weeks to really check the daylilies out just to give those laggerts a fighting chance ~jan

One that does very poorly here is Spiney Sea Urchin. I sent most of it south and only kept 1 fan.

I am with you Jan -- some of mine are still MIA due to weather -- others are starting to poke thru. Will have to figure out what survived and what didnt in a month. Smiling

I am happy to report that I didn't lose any daylilies, we had early snow and kept it all winter and temperatures weren't as cold as usual in this zone. A few of the one year old seedlings were slow to start but are now doing well. I thought that I had lost an Awesome Blossom prolif but it is starting to show growth.

As an experiment I put several potted dayliles under the deck with bags of mulch around them for some protection and piled leaves on top of them, they all survived, I was pleased that it worked so well.

Sandy, most of the two year old seedlings from the seed I got from you are doing great, I am hoping to see some bloom on them this year if the weather continues to cooperate.

I was out in the garden this past weekend and noticed that another fan of PERSISTENT BUTTERFLY had shown up. This was one I was worried about as there was barely anything left when temps started to warm up. I dug around and noticed that the grown seemed dessicated but not rotted so I left it in place. Other than that it is only new additions from last fall that are taking their time to get going. HAPPY HAPPY is growing out sideways and BUDDY'S CHLOE and PINK PANTHER are finally coming around. BC had spring sickness the worst of anything except perhaps HAPPY HAPPY. It was growing all twisted and contorted but finally got its act together and is growing nicely and put up a new fan.

Besides that I also noticed that I lost a lot of lillies, most of my blanket flowers and my butterfly bush and hydrangeas are starting from the ground up this year.

Sadly, I just keep finding more and more when I decide to dig and see what's left. LOTS of crown rot, resulting in mushy crowns, don't know if they'll come back once I give them a chance to dry out. Tet Lav Blue Baby, Twilight Secrets, SC Technical Knockout, Alexa Kathryn are what I recently discovered. I've never lost daylilies before, this is quite painful. We had a wet winter with much of it being rain instead of snow, thus lots of water freezing and thawing.

Sandy, that is very sad, Crying your winter sounds like it was a real killer for sure, that type of weather is so much harder on the plants than the constant cold and snow.

Sorry to hear aout the loses. I think all mine made it. I was worried because I'd let the whole back yard go dormant in the dought last summer. Glad they're tough.

Haven't lost any yet, but may in the days to come when it dips
into the 30's. Happily, Mort Morss does well here so far. I do check
on it more than others because I have read that it is not as hardy.

I have a few that are still struggling, they are all new last year. But the majority are alive, some are thriving, and some are finally starting to come back

I have noticed that my TB Iris - most of them did not increase as well as I had hoped for. Nice small clumps last year, many down to one or three fans this year (everything was transplanted into a new bed 2 years ago) Drought and that tough winter did it.

And the dandelions - they ALL survived..... ~Jan

I too have lost about 10 daylilies I planted last year. Same situation as Sandy. I noticed I am missing about a dozen iris, some alliums and Crown Imperial Frittalaria....... not to mention from winter loss......too much water.......just washed away from the flood we had this spring. I live next to the river. I am zone 5a, Illinois. Crazy winter and spring. Was so looking forward to seeing those new pretty faces.

I may have lost one. It heaved and was laying on top of the ground. It was not mushy so I replanted but it looked dead. It is strange because I have grown daylilies for 20 years and I have never had a daylily heave. Maybe it was because it was the first time I have ever planted a daylily in the Fall. I usually plant my daylilies in the Spring.

I have never had daylilies heave - and I have planted as late as mid- October. But I have had Iris heave - now when I transplant them, I put a rock on top of them for the first winter. ~Jan
