Hi, I live in zone 6b in Southcentral KY and enjoy my hosta but have only 2 maples in the yard. The feeder roots seem to be harsh on my hosta plants. I have repotted most of my older poor performing hosta to pots. My new ones I am growing in pots. Please post which are strong growing favorites. What size pot is large enough for a med size? Is a bigger pot best? I am using 1 gallon nursery pots for now. Do you tip over in winter. Thanks Teresa

I do not grow in pots but would think a med. hosta would need around a 5 gallon pot to reach potential.

First Blush and Island Breeze have both been very strong growers. If you have room for a large plant Tom Terrific is a good looking plant.

Reviewing some of my notes from Bob Solberg about growing hostas in pots, he is in NC.
Uses Plastic pots, repots every 2-3 years, does not water during the winter if in pots, soil should go right to the top of the pot to prevent water from sitting in them over the winter.
Pushes pots together, put white plastic over them and places mouse bait under the cover.

My favorite hostas with red stems are First Blush (great grower), Volcano Island

I won't comment on winter care for your zone as it's very different from mine in Ottawa, Canada. But a large pot, about 13" in diameter, will grow a good-sized hosta. As others have said, you'll want to repot in new soil occasionally.

As far as strong growers, most in the 'Halcyon'/'June' family are good growers for medium-sized plants. Try going to https://myhostas.be/sports/ind... Scroll down until you get to 'Halcyon' and click on it. You'll see a large list of sports.

I bought a gallon pot of Guacamole at Walmart summer of 2021 and split it into two pieces before planting this was it summer of 2022. It grew phenomenally well I think. It also has huge fragrant blooms and lots of them. I'm holding a regular size bloom under one of its blooms in pic.

Nice looking plant and flowers Duane! The fragrance on the plantaginea line of hostas is phenomenal, right up their with a tuberose.
