Wow, this is the same tree in @BlueOddish 's photo as well!

That wall is so lush compared to the other photo, how pretty!

Yes, it's the same tree. The building's façade is covered in Boston ivy which is deciduous, hence the barren look in my picture.
Unfortunately, this tree had almost all of it snapped off this previous winter due to the unusually wet and heavy snow we got. Sad

yup! Same tree. nodding Maybe he wanted to show the evergreen winter foliage? IDK. I'm not sure why the plant admin took a photo of a tree already in the database. It was certainly a lovely tree and probably will be again. Smiling Didn't break from rain & snow... Last winter was actually mild and unusually dry. Very little snow; which is why our Govenor issued a State of Emergency. Utah is in the middle of one of the longest and worst droughts in Utah history. lol. Are you sure you live in Utah?

I work at the place this tree is located. There were a series of events that led up to what happened to the tree.
In the Fall of 2020, the Wasatch Front (the urban area that contains 80%+ of Utah's 3.3 million people) experienced one of the worst wind storms in our recorded history with winds well within hurricane force. The storm toppled hundreds to possibly thousands of trees. The sequoia almost fell over, too, but in the end it made it through. Even though it didn't fall over, the tree was now leaning more than it did before. And while it's very true that we are in the middle of a megadrought and have been getting hardly any snow, in the two or three instances that we did get snow that winter, it was very heavy, wet, sticky, and humid snow; very different from our usual dry powdery snow. Because the tree was now leaning, more snow was able to accumulate on it and it finally broke.
I remember the one morning I was walking into work and noticed something was missing but wasn't sure what. It was a few moments later that I saw the tree laying smack dab in the middle of the shrubs out front. Crying

The tree is still there, but it's only about 8 feet tall now.

Ah!!!! Yes. "The inland hurricane." weakened the tree. That makes sense. The Sequoia roots grow pretty shallow. Once blown over it would have just toppled from it's own weight by mere irrigation if it created very damp soil. My place was right in the pathway of that storm so I lost over 30 mature box elders. Grumbling My home and garage rooves were damaged by one of the trees. I still have alot of clean up work that needs to be done. On the bright side... after the roof repairs there was room for new landscaping. I've been installing fruit trees and at least a half dozen came from Western Garden this year. Thank You!

As it were... I have planted three Giant Sequoia (Not pendulum) at my place. So far I have not seen a good looking pendulum specimen for sale in Utah. A few years ago in the very early springtime I came into the store. I asked an employee at W.G. if he could order one in. He told me "Those cannot grow in Utah." Rolling on the floor laughing "Yes they can" I responded "Would you like to see one?" I then walked him outside and showed him the one in his front yard. "You guys are growing one. I want to order one for me."

The employee was very surprised... "OH! I wondered what that was." He replied. Rolling on the floor laughing
