Tips for Rooting Dehydrated Plumeria Cuttings

By GigiAdeniumPlumeria

It is the time of the year when the weather is getting warmer, and it's a great time to start rooting those plumeria cuttings we hid during the winter. Some may be dehydrated, but a wet paper towel wrapped around the stem works well to re-hydrate the stem of the cuttings while rooting.

Excellent advice, Gigi, will take it, too. Almost lost an Oahu Star this week, I don't know why, the middle just got thinner and thinner (wasp-waisted) and it became soft, too. So I cut way above that part, and used a rooting hormone with fungicide, on the cutting, which I'm allowing to callus, again in the hope of saving it. May wrap it as you suggest, as well, since it's wrinkling a little, too....
Hope that does the trick!

Good luck Cyra. It helped with mine, I had to cover the base of my cuttings with a clear plastic because I didn't want to wet the soil when I would mist the paper towel. The 2 cuttings I did not wrap with paper towel right away still looks shriveled and I lost one that I did not wrap at all. For some reason, having the wet (but not soggy) paper towel makes me worry less about my cutting drying out and the cuttings seem to like it too. I will post an update here next week, the leaves just started clawing out must faster now on these 2 rooted cuttings so I had to slowly acclimate them with the outdoor environment now that it is starting to warm up.

Here are the ones I did not wrap right away, although I finally did when I realized the benefit of wrapping wet paper towel:

Here are the 2 cuttings I planted right away (they were ready to be planted when I got them). I repotted one yesterday to its permanent pot. . The second one got black tip from the cold weather but recovered and now have 3 tips.

The reason why I did not plant all right away was my fear that they will not root since it was winter time. However, we had a warm winter (except for some days of cold snap) which helped the first 2 plants that I planted right away.

We humans absorb (and expel) through our skin, makes sense that plants might be able to, as well...

Thanks for that tip, I too love plumeria. I don't know the names, but have a white one and a candy stripe one that i got as cuttings last year. Haven't decided yet if they should stay in the pots or set in the ground. Making decisions is one of my weak points.

You're welcome :). Some plumeria growers would actually bury the potted plants (plastic pots) in the ground. This way, they can pull the potted plants and bring it in winter time; with minimal damage to the roots. Mine are all in plastic pots; which are placed inside the ceramic or terracota pots. My biggest plumeria tree in the pot is 8 to 9 feet tall and have multi-tips. For some reason, I love seeing them in decorative pots Lovey dubby Lovey dubby .

Here is an update of my dehydrated cuttings, looks like these are going to be successful rooting. I still kept the wet paper towels since Iit protects the stems from the hot sun. I just replace them before they look nasty.

Gigi, the temp. today is 102 degrees ...cuttings that arrived in a healthy condition are developing wrinkles, they're all wrapped, and look like plumie mummies!
Thanks,
Cyra
