Recent threads seems to be new posts to old threads and new threads. But Recent Threads is mostly new posts to old threads?

And, after the new posts and new threads, it gives you the option to continue reading new threads.

Kind of confusing. Is there any way new threads could be highlighted from new posts?

Or, can the recent Threads be renamed new or recent posts and a new threads homepage area created?

I agree. There are a number of threads from YEARS ago that come under 'new' because of a recent comment...Wastes alot of time for everyone.

Perhaps @dave could write a bit of code to find all threads older than (pick a date) then write a bit of code to lock them. Hopefully it wouldn't be a lot of work...

I can pretty easily lock threads that haven't been replied to in a certain amount of time.

Maybe all threads that haven't had a reply for 2 years or more should be locked?

I don't think that THAT's necessarily the issue...I for one like to reply to the newests threads asap (if I have the time and knowledge) so the TS doesn't need to wait too long...Also, replying to a thread that's been posted years ago...chances are it's not relevant to the TS anymore (if he/she is still a member...)

I like the idea of locking old threads... 2 years or more sounds good. I do agree that's not the issue.

I agree that new threads are usually more important than years old threads. Actually, I am more interested in new threads than new posts to existing threads. If I read a new thread and I am interested, I watch it.

I would like to see a "new threads" area on my home page or have the new threads highlighted on the existing "Recent Threads" area. However, I would prefer a "new threads" section.

I would passionately urge against locking discussions merely because some length of time has passed. Some plant things happen very slowly and 2 years is not enough time to determine that no new posts will be added to a discussion. That would severely diminish the value of this site to me. I use various discussion to track plants over very long amounts of time. This isn't FB where discussions are "here today, gone tomorrow." That is one of the primary reasons I haven't used FB for 4 years. It would be personally devastating to invest years in an experiment and then not be able to come back to share and discuss the results.

Frank, which forum is moving so fast that you're having this trouble? Why is it difficult to just not click into discussions that do not interest you?

Thinking Locking a thread would not remove it and one could always refer back to it for info/relevance couldn't they?

Yes, I'm sure that's true but if one wants to add an update, that would not be possible. I'm involved in many discussions that have been going on for more than a decade, with occasional pauses of a few years sometimes. It's not my decision to make but I don't see any reason this would add value to the site. It's always necessary to scroll past discussions that one does not want to read.

I'm wondering if there is a setting in preferences that I might have set that automatically takes me to the most recent addition, that maybe Frank has not arranged the same way? It's been a long time since I looked @ the preferences on here, after getting it like-I-like-it a long time ago. I want Frank's experiences here to be as satisfying as mine, but am not convinced the proposed solution is the best way.

My original post was meant to point out that the "Recent Threads" area on my home page was actually mostly "New Posts to old threads". And, mixed in with the old threads, were new threads. I was hoping that "New Threads" could be highlighted in some way to make it easier for me to find them.

Are you able to share a screenshot? There are no discussion on my home page, probably because I set it up that way.

There are so many personalizations available in the settings on this site, I think we can find a solution for you that already exists. I think the home page component you're seeing is either your "thread watcher" or "your posts."

Or - are you talking about the "NEW" next to each forum on the forum list page? If so, I have noticed a quirk there. If I go first to "my posts" and look at all of the discussions that have a new post, then go to the list of forums, that forum will still say new even though I already looked @ the new thing. Maybe that is what you are seeing?

It might make sense then that the "Recent Threads" list simply exclude threads that are a few months old.

Right now it's really a "Recently Replied to Threads" list and therefore it's not functionally behaving the way it is described.

Dave, might I suggest adding a "New Threads" list to show newly-created or recent threads and rename "Recent Threads" to "Active Threads"? I think that would give Frank what he's after whilst making it clearer as to what each list is.

Thank you, Frank. That is not a view I use on this site, so that is why I did not know what you were describing.

Thank you, Dave and Joshua for your efforts at "customer service."
