Also, by being able to purchase them prior you avoided not getting them at all in case they sold when offered full size. There are some vendors that wont do this and Ive missed many a rose I wanted.

I agree about growth rates.

Is it a normal practice among sellers to offer "not quite ready" or still-rooting rose cuttings for immediate purchase on their websites? I have no problem waiting for these roses to arrive. I'm excited to get these two varieties. However teasing a ship date and then no communication when said date passes and I ask when they will be shipped, is not the best customer service.

Meanwhile, I wait for their arrival. I hope the quality of these roses equals their reputation.

Mike said: High Country Roses enjoys a strong reputation here on the forum. In my estimation, it's good that they're being honest about the size of the root and giving it time to mature before sending it out. Just like people, growth rates of individual plants can't be predicted with absolute certainty; some will just take a little longer than others.

It's been a long wait for these roses to arrive. From the May order date to their arrival last Friday. But, here they are....

I'll leave them in their pots, add them to my table of overwintering plants under the grow lights. I'll decide next Spring if they've grown enough to get set into the rose bed or if I up-pot and let them grow in the pots for another year.

On the left is Reine de Violettes and right is Communis Moss Rose, rosa centifolia - both from High Country Roses.

Every rose I've gotten from High Country Roses has arrived healthy and the plants have thrived. Yes, the plants were small and I worried about that, but, they have all done extremely well, quadrupling their growth since I planted them in May.
Since this thread is about Old Garden Roses, I just planted Madame Plantier, an Alba hybrid that will probably end up too large for my yard. I love her flowers, though, so, am taking a change I can handle her.
Best of luck with your new roses. I love the old ones, too.

I'm curious about why in early September in zone 6 you would grow these roses inside under lights, instead of growing them outside? Or maybe you meant that once the weather turns, you'll grow them inside.

Thank you Patricia for your insight. These are exactly the words I needed to read. Good luck with your Madame Plantier. She is a great beauty. Yes, I'm worried about their small size, too and want do everything in my power to not lose them. Our night temps are already down in the 50Fs and we've had a rollercoaster range of temps this year. I don't know if these babies have been grown entirely inside a greenhouse or if they've been hardened off before being shipped. Perhaps someone who's previously bought little rose plants from HC can lend their insight too. Maybe I'm just overthinking this and being a helicopter rose mama. I'd hate to put them outside and lose them before they have a chance to thrive. I do have a semi shaded patio area where I harden off
plants. I can set them here until we do get the colder nights.

Yes, High Country told me their roses are grown in greenhouses and why you need to harden them off for a few days to get them used to the sun. I am in zone 6, also, and planted M. Plantier last week. I may give that rose some winter protection because it's late for planting, but, I believe you can plant your roses now and get something to protect them before very cold winter weather gets here. Roses are tough plants and the ones I got from H. C. grew like crazy once I put them in the ground. You should have gotten a set of directions from H. C. when the roses came and directions for hardening them off. It's not the night temps. H.C. is concerned about...it's sun exposure, which, the roses are not use to. I hardened mine off for 3 days, then planted them and they have thrived far more than I thought they would in their first year.
I can't wait till M.Plantier blooms next year. Her roses are just beautiful. Smiling

Regarding High Country Roses, if you have an account (basically sign up with an email), you can create a Wishlist, and also if a rose is out of stock, create an in-stock notification. I've done that with several roses, as soon as they become available, I receive a notification email and I'm able to order. It's a great system when you are 'stalking' a rose!

I did exactly that, Claire. Put Konigin von Danemark on it, which, I'm hoping to get in the spring.

I'm trying to get my local nursery woman to set this up in her site here. I'll pass on the link for heirloom roses from high Country Roses so that she can have a similar set-up. Imho it will be the only way we can get that wonderful group of roses back into the market not only from the $$ side but also its practical availability!!! Actually it can also hold true for other roses as well: i.e. out of trade David Austins, Pernettianas ( like Pere Dot's), rugosas, species roses and many no longer available hybrid teas. Like in so many other kinds of products, only the test of time gives the correct measure of what's worthy maintaining. Not always, the newest is the best. Roses aren't techno machines... nodding ....fortunately.... Smiling

Arturo, I'm not sure if you're familiar with Palatine roses from Canada, but they have an inventory of amazing roses that aren't readily available in the USA, and the quality is exceptional. For the second year in a row, they've adopted the practice of quietly opening their website to prevent it from crashing when North Americans try to purchase their roses. You mentioned emails... 😊

Elena, speaking of breathtaking catalogues...Have you ever browsed thru Pepinieres Loubert from France?
Just as a sample, I love albas...
https://www.pepiniere-roseslou...
When I get carried away... Whistling I imagine myself buying bare roots from them, sometime in ( obviously distant) future... *Blush*
Then reality slaps me to my present circumstances D'Oh!
so...
Green Grin! I thank God with what He has already provided me...
Just came inside after watering my roses, checking all of those OGRs that are still sulking in their swelling of buds, wondering if I'll be able to enjoy them this season, one by one. All of these are standing in 8 gallon tubs inside my cool greenhouse. I'm also spreading out dahlia tubers in the warm compartment of another greenhouse...so I have plenty to dream about. Smiling Some of the modern roses have already first buds! So I don't have to feel rose deprived for too long ahead... Hilarious!

Arturo, they have Small Maiden's Blush. First time I've ever seen it anywhere. Uhoh. I may need it someday. Confused
However, can they ship to America?

Patricia, I've known that recently they have shipped to Argentina...that means that they pursue overseas trade. I suppose the way would be just t0 write to them and find out.
The OGR bug is extremely difficult to get rid off...
Any time I want to get aware once again how many other wonderful roses are available elsewhere I open up their catalogue and simply Drooling Drooling Drooling over the images. Masochist? perhaps... nodding hopeful definitely... Green Grin!
