Im in East TX zone 8b and I counted 147 hyacinths sprouted so far in my beds. A few have visible buds but no coloration yet. Haven't counted tulip sprouts but probably have about a dozen so far.

I'm need to divide and move some bulbs. They bloomed and are just now starting to yellow.Yesterday I tried to get a trowel under some to move and it was too hard and thick. I didn't want to get too forceful and damge the bulbs. When the foliage completely dies back do the roots die back too? Maybe then it would be easier to lift these..any suggestions

I'll bet that whenever you move them you're going to need more than a trowel. I get the dh and his sharpshooter shovel to get underneath most of the bulbs that I attempt to move. Those big crinums almost bent the shovel trying to get them out...'course daffs and other bulbs are easier, but can still be challenging. I've never worried too much about roots when digging deep under the bulb like that, though. Difficult to hurt most bulbs unless you chop through them...Yep, done that, too, lol!

The roots do die back after the foliage does, but make sure you mark the spot well. I've been so sure I was digging in the right spot before and unable to find the bulbs, LOL. Bev is right, a bigger spade or fork is good for digging them. They tend to work themselves deeper into the soil after a few years. The bulbs are pretty tough, so aside from slicing through them, you don't have to be too concerned with damaging them.

Thanks for the info. The spot is really easy to remember because it is at the very front of the bed, but I'll stick a marker there just in case. I guess I'll let all the foliage die back and try it then.I have a drip irrigation in that bed so I have to be extra careful where I do any shoveling...

Charleen, I LOVE the Snowflakes! How tall are yours? I've never really grown any, but I'm thinking there's an early variety and a later, taller one. I've got a bunch of those kind of Daffodils that were already growing here, I believe them to be an heirloom called 'Van Sion'.

Charleen, those yellow heirlooms are so lovely! Very graceful.

Tami, I think Charleen may be making the same offer, but just in case, I've got tons of those Van Sion Daffs that have to be relocated. So don't buy any, I can send you plenty for postage Smiling

My amaryllis is coming up, they are in a shaded area, after they bloom I may move them to a sunnier place. Love amaryllis that grow outside.
