into the back garden. He suddenly pointed to his right and asked, "What are we going to do about that?" He was referring to a 65 foot long section of privacy wood fencing. The fencing faced a large rectangular lawn area containing 3 Sycamore trees and the square brick & wood patio area in the first photo. The patio contained built-in seating and raised rose beds. The roses were complimented by Catmint plants.
Other than that it was a big, rectangular portion of lawn grass... until we decided to put in the conifer bed.

These three photos show the concrete garden border, conifers planted, and the heavy river rocks used for mulch. The river rocks were rough and silver grey with black flecks. They looked great... but they were not very practical. So we mulched the bed with 2 inches of pine needles... and then lay the river rock on top of them.
