For me it's Elizabeth Black:

At the moment it sells for $550. I'm hoping the price comes down in the next twenty years so that I can treat myself for my sixtieth birthday!

I would probably buy a few hectares with a nice new house and vines in southern France or Italy if money would not be an object and make a huge garden with all kinds of peonies and make my own wine ...I wish! I would rather go for a quantity with reasonably priced and proven varieties... Maybe a few new fancy ones as well to spice it up. But only after I see them in person.

Alex, I am thinking along those lines too.
Besides this small garden in Toronto, I inherited an orchard with some really old tree peonies. I would like to spend more time there and plant more tree peonies below the fruit trees. I would go with old classics.

I tried to get Origin of Serenity this time but it sold out before I finished checking out. Got Elizabeth Black last fall and I'll probably target Kim when I get some feedback on how it opens in the south. Still want Dionne as well so I guess just about any new Nate Bremer intro……

I would probably get the one at Peony Shop that Joshua named for his Mother. I can't remember the name, but the photo was beautiful, and you know you would only name the best for your Mom!

I would buy a tree peony.
The one that I want is Autumn Harvest which is described as having blue green foliage as well as yellow blooms.

In order to make my most wanted peony list, I need a field tour. With that, based on my last field tour, my most wanted would be 'Kim' from Nate Bremer at Solaris Farms. I have never seen in my life such an enormous flower supported by a beautiful & sturdy stem. It was like OMG that's gonna be in my garden some day, it has to be!

I do much, much better making lists in person. You see the true plant habit and flower form in real time.

I've only visited Solaris once, during the APS convention in WI with the group. That place is overwhelming! You'd have to go in disciplined to do a good list! I agree that seeing them IRL is the best way to decide which to purchase. I'm probably lucky that Joshua doesn't participate in the convention and show his blooms, if Champlain becomes active in the society that could be very detrimental to my retirement account!

Buying beautiful plants is a good investment for retirement.
You could always dig some up , sell part and replant.
Or you could run a charity event where a donation to your charity allowed people to dig up part of a root.

Great idea never occurred to do a garden digs for a charity.
I have done garden digs with club members for years to repot them for raising funds for horticulture school scholarships. Or just planting seeds and sell seedling for Mother's Day for fund raising .

I like your ideas, Caroline. I do think about selling once retired but not sure, definitely want to have plenty to trade and share with friends! And I've chosen more that have noted fertility and pretty seedlings…

My answer would be an "ALL of them!" If money's no object, I would also like to include the person who would dig/plant them. I'm a daylily nutter but admit there is nothing more beautiful (mostly fragrant) introduction to spring than the peonies. I think of planting peonies like planting trees, not only do you do it for yourself but for future generations.

You are so right Diane! It would be magic having someone else do the digging. This past fall I had an easy time because my roots went into beds I already have. This year I am out of room and will have to do a lot of desodding and digging as I extend my beds. My neighbourhood is severely lacking in sturdy teenagers looking for pocket money.

Diane is right! We would buy them all!

Hiyamakki, does the local high school have an agricultural program? You might want to contact the teacher in charge and let him know you would like to hire some occasional help.

Capace, now is the time to order a yellow tree peony from a reputable seller. Stay away from the resellers as we have learned that you don't always get what you pay for.

They will deliver in the Fall, which is the correct time for planting.

What yellow tree peonies do you like, Capice? I know it's not popular but my favorite is still Alice Harding. It's a tiny plant, only a few feet high at most, with the prettiest huge yellow blooms. I planted it behind a 3' or so retaining wall at both gardens I've had it planted in, since the blooms are so big and heavy they face down and don't display as well at ground level. Could probably put it in a pot in the new garden, wouldn't survive the zone 4 winter at the old house.
