We have a few more nights below 20F so I forked out for the 15 pound bag of Sizzlin Heat seed mix. It does get a nice mix of birds in. I don't see much waste or shell mess at all. Another mix I had, has left cracked corn untouched.
White millet is ever popular and I look at these little fluffballs eating these very tiny seeds to survive. Boggles the mind.
Plant it and they will come.

We've been seeing a smaller hawk lately (smaller than our usual red-tailed pair). I took several shots, and dang it all of them were blurry, but this is the best of them. I'm thinking maybe sharp-shinned hawk? Very streaked breast and about the same (almost stocky) body type as a red-tailed.

Or it could be a red shoulder hawk??

I've recently seen a red shoulder hawk right by the bird feeders... they are usually down by the pond, going after frogs and bugs. Maybe because the pond froze over...

*Blush* I"ll go there now!

(btw, not red-shouldered, as those are a bit bigger than red-tailed I think)

According to my birding book, Red Shouldered Hawks get to 16", and Red Tailed Hawks get to 18". I had a pair of Red Shouldered Hawks build a nest 40 feet from my house for several years. Sure looks like a Red Shouldered Hawk to me. I can identify a Red Shouldered Hawk by their very distinctive calls. If you hear a loud, fierce territorial call, it may be a Red Shouldered Hawk.

Yes, the Red-tailed Hawk is the largest hawk I see, larger than the Red Shouldered Hawk.

The Red-tailed is the one I've always had to watch out for with my free range chickens.

The breast/chest color looks like a good sign for Red shoulder VS red tailed.
For me, I think I hear red shoulders cry as two syllables -shoul-der-- and red tail as one long scream -taaaiiiillll.
Plant it and they will come.

Size, color, and call -- we definitely have a pair of red-tailed hawks in the area. They like to perch on the dead mimosa in the middle of the back yard (part of the reason we haven't had it taken down).

that, and maybe for woodpeckers- we have a dead tree too- dang Norway maple, hidden between couple other maples. It's not big enough or in a position where pieces falling will cause $ damage. The easy button- pick up what falls!
Plant it and they will come.

Yep! This dead/dying row of sassafras trees were another matter... as they continued to break off, there was a good chance of damage to the $$$ fence (not ours) behind it. I think the crew did a nice job of making the stumps look more "natural" by varying their heights and also adding a bunch of V cuts instead of leaving it as a flat cut on top. They couldn't cut lower due to an old barb-wire fence literally running through those trees.

It never occurred to me to "unwatch" the thread... at least then I wouldn't be a repeat offender! I'll do that now, so I won't post here again no matter when it gets locked!
