All Things Plants couldn't go live until Dave either out-waited or legally defeated (details of that lawsuit were not public, nor should they have been) some noncompete clause from the initial sale of DG. When that parent company got into financial trouble and sold DG to another company is when Dave was forced out. Cubits was a way of continuing the DG forums, because the gardening cubits weren't owned by Dave, he was just providing the infrastructure.

I'm personally sad that I can't use Cubits to open a store now, because that function initially worked really well. ETSY is expensive and full of rules. I'm a happy customer there but not sure about being a seller.

Could be right, Susan! and after looking through all the names on the photo, I think it was Gardenguykin that made that picture. Seems so long ago now...

Jill, I think your memory is probably right about the "history". Do you, or anyone else, remember that a lot of us temporarily joined up on a site that a friend of Ella had? "Tink," I think ??

i remember when Tink left NGA. She was upset because of the new rules, not allowing her to trade seeds anymore. I think she was from Belgium. It's too bad we can't get seeds from certain countries anymore. Was it because of Brexit?

I miss Chiltern's Seeds and T&M. At least I was able to get delphinium seeds from New Zealand, without any problems or special permits.

I don't recall that photo but it must have been from Cubits since it came before ATP. Speaking of, remember the coffee mugs? Mine's sitting on my desk (along with handmade gifts from my dgd). Smiling

Tink, if you mean tuinkabouter, she is from the Netherlands. I don't think she ever really used ATP much but I could be wrong. I didn't find her in a search I just did here... But she still has her store. She was a huge part of Ella's Garden's seed swaps on Cubits.

Evelyn, you might be thinking of someone else, Joann... I can't recall her last name but she was from Belgium and I do recall something about her wanting to leave when we became Garden.org. She had a beautiful garden and a great seed-site.

About getting seeds from other countries, countries are cracking down on the importation of what could be invasive species. They can wreck entire habitats. For example, California coastal grasslands are botanically impoverished because of invasive species.

You're right, Kelli. Too many invasive species coming in and they can take over... kudzu comes to mind!! It's not the same as it was back then, during Ella Garden days. I think Tuinkabouter stopped shipping here many years ago because of the strict rules. Even from Canada, it has become a big problem getting through customs, even if it's garden seeds like tomatoes.

Heck, it's hard getting seeds via USPS! I'm waiting on some seeds from Horseshoe, and he mailed them on Monday last week! Angry

There are good reasons for the new regulations... but it's still annoying!

A friend and I traded irises a couple of years ago soon after the new Postmaster General was appointed. Her shipment ended up being sent (diverted) to Hawaii. My shipment also went there. We both live in Northern California. Not even out of state.

Our shipments usually arrive within 3 or 4 days via Priority Mail. There was no explanation by the post office for this diversion. We were both left scratching our heads!

It is head scratching when tracking a package and watch it travel all over the US, back and forth for days and weeks! Hilarious!

Remember back in 2020 when it was reported that random people were receiving unsolicited seeds in the mail from China? That was really weird. I never heard if anyone figured out what kind of seeds they were. I just remember thinking I hope they don't just throw them out, no telling what we'll end up with. Blinking

They could be noxious weed seeds. I guess if you planted them in pots to see what happens...but I think there was a warning not to plant them and report it if you received them.

I sent an eBay purchase (book) to Washington, and it went to Alaska and kind of got lost there, but they found it after I had them look.
