Hi all! I'm new here, from zone 6a in central United States. I'm seeking fruit plants to grow as annuals, or that will bear fruit this season. One in particular I'm interested in are Physalis species, or ground cherries. I'm intrigued by their proclaimed sweetness and pineapple-like flavor. Are there similar sweet fruits you'd recommend?

If you like ground cherries, there are several other fruiting vegetables in that category, Tomatillos, tomatoes, Garden Huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum)

Hi!
I garden in South Dakota. Ground Cherries are everything as advertised. I *adore* ground cherries. They will reseed so if you plant them once, you will probably not have to buy seeds in subsequent years. If that might be a problem, locate plant accordingly.

This year I am planting a tomatillo that is supposed to be sweet, the Queen of Malinalco. Last year I planted the Amarylla tomatillo, but didn't find it as sweet as I was hoping.

Strawberries will give you a crop the first year if you buy plants, although not annuals. I am planting strawberries in pots this year, so for me they will be annuals until I find a variety I like. Not sure if my soil but they keep tasting sour. Maybe I'll have better luck in pots.

Great question!

Toscana strawberries.
Sown February 2

Sending runners March 27
All under lights
Now moved to a south window.
Will pot the runners to get more plants.
Not sure that this variety will make our winter…but will test them!
These give pink flowers so can do double duty in garde.
