Two different plants registered with the same name, only the older of the two (Salter's) is not in the registry?

The Salters INTRODUCED a cultivar as 'Organized Chaos' which is not the same as registering. The Salters regrettably went through several "spells" over the years of not registering cultivars, which essentially meant they were introducing seedlings, as registering a cultivar is the only way to protect the name you choose or ensure that someone else doesn't use it. James Fennell has worked extensively with the Salters and AHS registrar over the past few years to help them get those unregistered ones "legal" and get caught up. Several names that were submitted were NOT approved, so this may appear under some other name in the AHS Database.

So what does that mean for the daylily that I have by the name Organized Chaos? Does that mean it no longer is its name because another breeder registered a daylily of theirs by that name? If this one I have was submitted and approved with a different name, how do I find this out without having to spend hours combing through the database? Or just not worry about it. lol

You might contact James Fennell who works for the Salters and has tried to get this mess of unregistered cultivars registered. He should be able to tell you! Regarding your cultivar name, you may have to change the tag if it has been registered by another name. The registrar sent me a long list of the Salters cultivars last year that had been registered and several had had the first choice names rejected. If I get a chance, I 'll try to look back through the hundreds of emails to see if this one is mentioned.

I could just give it a tag that says 'the daylily formerly known as Organized Chaos' (like the artist formerly known as Prince...ha!) and not worry about it, I only have one measly fan left of it so who knows, it may well croak (though I don't know why, it had been doing well until this year). But this may be of some interest to others who have this daylily and may be reading this and want to know the information, too. Just hate to be a bother.

I just moved your image into the general daylily entry Daylilies (Hemerocallis) since it really didn't belong with Paul Owen's intro. If you do ever find out if it was finally registered under another name, please submit a proposal to move the image. Thumbs up

I think the best thing to do would be as Julie said, do the investigative work per her suggestions and see if another registered name was assigned to this one. Thumbs up

'the daylily formerly known as Organized Chaos' All kidding aside, that name would not be accepted by the registration committee because it exceeds the maximum number of letters allowed for a registered cultivar ( 30 letters not including spaces) .

Personally, I find it very frustrating that a few hybridizers introduce cultivars without first registering them because then these confusions arise and people are then mad and upset and contact AHS about this. We are not the daylily police and we cannot make people register, and sometimes we don't know when people are selling unregistered introductions until we either stumble across it or someone lets us know. Anyone who buys a new introduction should ALWAYS check that it is registered before you purchase - that is, if it means anything to you that the name is accepted, ( so that you won't buy something only to find that the name has been assigned to another registration, as happened with this!) or that it would ever be eligible to be entered into a flower show or win any AHS awards. Those two methods mentioned are the only controls that AHS has over hybridizers registering. if a hybridizer is not in compliance with registration ( to the best of our knowledge) then he or she is not eligible to nominate any cultivars for awards.

There are still a couple of people ( that I am currently aware of) who are selling daylilies for top dollar prices out there that are NOT registered, so " caveat emptor." - buyer beware!
