My first time trying to grow a garden. I planted some broccoli in a pot. I covered them when the frost came. However, now I noticed my leaves are changing color. Can someone put me in the direction of finding a way to diagnose and fix my leaves changing?

Concur: need a photo. Most varieties of broccoli are big plants. Need big containers like 5 gallons per plant. They are also heavy feeders especially N. Given proper space and fertilization, broccoli is an easy plant to grow.

That is probably the result of your covering them and the cover touching the plants. Happens often especially with plastic films. They are way too crowded for good production. For future reference, broccoli is very cold tolerant, handles temps in the low 20's except when heading when the heads will freeze at about 28 degrees F.

So they are ok? I was planning on putting them in the ground this weekend. Someone told me they are hard to grow. Since I've never really had a garden before I put them in the big pot just to see if they would live. My gardening experience is limited to 2 tomato plants.

I agree with Dillard, your plants are too crowded. Also the leaves must have gotten touched by the cold covering. I recommend using an old sheet or layers of hay or leaves in the future rather than plastic. Creating a tent made of foam insulation boards works good to.

If you are transplanting the into the ground I use 15-18 inch spacing each way. They are easy to grow. Major problems in Georgia are buttoning (cause by plant being stunted when young), Cabbage worms(I use BT dust , very effective, heat ( will not head in July August temps).

Agree, if you get them into the ground this weekend, that will make them take off. Be sure to put some granular fertilizer around them, as broccoli plants are heavy feeders. Then shade them for a couple of days after transplanting, and gradually remove the shade. Water deeply every day. You'll have broccoli to eat before it gets too hot. This is my favorite timed-release fert for leafy things. Available at Lowe's or off amazon as brand name "Nutricote" - same stuff, different name.
