Quartzsite az (Zone 9b)
please help identify. This is a large cactus about 6 feet tall. It is growing in Quartzsite Arizona. It has very long spines up to 6 inches long. Single stem with branching on upper stems.

Agreed that little young branch is telltale. They do this change of appearance as the plant parts grow and age, but young branches always have that telltale look most of us know because we generally see young plants for sale.

Given time this will grow into a large arborescent cactus. A neighbor a few houses down have a huge one - making a good effort at dwarving the nearby Saguaro.
It is what it is!
