Hostas
Hi, we planted 2 Hosta 'Fragrant Blue' 8 years ago when the plants were the 1-gallon size and they both had pale blue leaves...until this year when one came up 'variegated' (picture attached). I've seen others go from variegated to non-variegated...but never the other way around. How is this possible? I couldn't find any info on this. Thanks.

Found this on the Hosta Library site:
'Fragrant Blue' is one of the bluest hostas and truly a breakthrough in hosta breeding. It combines the fragrance of plantagenia with the blue color of sieboldiana. It was renamed and registered in 1988 with made-up parentage by Aden, and is one of the many plants he took without permission from Kevin Vaughn. The actual parentage and original name were lost. It is a medium size plant, largely without problems and highly fertile.

Kevin is one of the contributors on the semp site, perhaps he would have some info.

Great information, thanks! I suspect our drought through the fall and winter (i.e. Exceptional Drought: D4) played a role in the hosta reverting to one of its parents. Because of its location, this hosta did not receive the same love and attention its sibling received. Regarding the name of the hosta (i.e. Fragrant Blue)...it is not fragrant at all, which is something others have noted; however, it is indeed very blue...the palest blue of all our hostas. Thanks again!
