Hello Gardeners,
we planted a Heirloom Roses - viking queen, 1 gallon. The plant had few blooms last year. But it has not grown at all since planted. It is getting 5-6 hrs Sunlight , watering regularly. It is healthy but not growing. It is supposed to be growing fast to be a tall and wide climber.
Am I missing anything?
TIA

There's an old saying about newly planted climbing roses, especially those grown on their own roots such as those sold by Heirloom, versus climbers that are grafted onto generic root stock:

"The first year they sleep; the second year they creep; and the third year they leap!"

Thank you Mike. I provided a support this morning although it does not need, to give it some training. Let's hope...Thanks again.

Sanjita, I wouldn't worry. Your rose probably works underground to establish the roots first Smiling

Hello Jasmin, Mike and Garden lovers. Just wanted to give an update. I provided a support and tried to give training . Surprise. In less than 2 months time, it has grown at least 1.5 feet in height and gained some width (fatter)...It is blooming too, however some blooms, and even at bud stage, they are darkening. Internet info - fungus. I have rose anti fungal spray. I will use some. Happy gardening. Thanks.

Sanjita, are you feeding your Viking Queen? Now that it has been in the ground for a year, you can start to push it a little bit, in terms of regular liquid fertilizers (and even granular ones now, which are verboten the first year, according to Heirloom). You can alternate fish/organic style fertilizer with ones with N-P-K, either 10-10-10, 20-20-20, or even Miracle Gro water soluble rose plant food. (my roses respond well to any of the above). I find that regular feeding makes a world of difference with both growth AND blooms. Many roses need feeding to perform at their best, maybe this could give your Viking Queen a boost so you could enjoy more blooming this season. And yes, Mike and others are right about the rose needing time to root during the first years. I'm predicting you will have the climber you envisioned in year 3, but in the meantime, try regular feeding to supplement the watering regime, it should make a difference. Good luck!
