I'd like to know what this is, and I don't have a clue. It has large flowers, maybe 5-6 inches across and is richly colored, blooming right now along w my iris.

Does it look like "The President"? That name sounds familiar to me?
I planted these several years ago and now I don't have a clue what it is.

I think so, I will keep the name and wait to see. Does it bloom on old or new growth? I think this one had blooms on both? Does that sound right?

Yes, it is a type 2 that does that and judging from your zone it sounds about right to be blooming now. Maybe other zones ~5 can confirm.
