I got my first box, about a month earlier than usual from a vendor that I have not used in probably 6 or 7 years but they had the iris that I have been on a multi year quest to get. Hopefully, this time I won't have to wait 2 years to find it is the wrong one. What is this object of desire?

And the two obsessions planted in my mind by Jan

and the pollen parent of Festival of Lights (I already have the pod parent) Thomas Johnson intro'd several plants from this cross. Every one knocked me out - so I just decided to make a bunch of my own

and this looked cool - I need more red iris in my garden.

I have a very positive impression of Hugh Stout's creations as a result of his Above the Fray - which really is gorgeous, of the highest quality.

And this Blyth - supposed to be very, very early

This looked very nice, but they sent me a dicey looking rhizome. Not sure if it will make it - were they not in New Mexico, I'd say it looked like it had been attacked by a borer

And this right-up-my alley purple lovely

I sure love Samba Queen, but I couldn't get it to survive here.

Yeah @AndreaD , I know. I had forgotten some of the things I ordered. Fact is, I really don't need you to send me anything this year.

Thanks, Marilyn

I'm trying to decide how I feel about trying to get the same iris to grow over and over again. I lost Elizabethan Age twice. I gave it one more go in a new location and it has made a big beautiful clump. Having to move everything when I had the borer situation has shown me that in my case, it's location, location. But then there's Painted Word, that remains a 3 inch fan in my sunniest bed. In both our cases, where weather varies from year to year, a lot may just be out of our control.

I have lost Elizabethan Age twice, too. It's been a few years, but I ordered it again in one of my last orders several weeks ago.
If it still doesn't grow well , it will not be replaced again.
Nice order, Lyn.

Derylin, my observation about it: it likes a lot of sun, very sensitive to drainage - I have it on a slight slope and that seems to have made the difference. In my case, it rotted both previous times.

The longer I'm involved with iris, the more I realize that not every variety will thrive in the same conditions. Bad events can provide learning opportunities. I would not have moved every single plant in my garden, but that was the way it worked out due to the borer emergency dig. I actually got to see how much difference being in a certain bed made. Some people have a lot of land and every iris is planted in a sunny open spot, so this will probably not be so relevant in that situation.

Lyn,
Sutton's sent me a message they could get a Renaissance Place for me, too. Hurray!
So glad you gave me the idea to ask.

Yay! Now we have to keep that temperamental sucker alive. Let's make a pact: one of ours dies and the other one lives, the person with the living one will provide the person whose iris died with a root as soon as it is big enough. We can't count on Sutton's continuing to have it year after year, and I have looked and looked - no one else has it for sale in the US, at least no one with a business online.
