my roses are putting up suckers at an alarming rate. Why, what can I do?

The best way to deal with suckers is not to cut them (they'll just come back), but to literally tear them off from the point of origin below the graft, or along the root they're growing off of. Sometimes this might require you to carefully dig some space around the base of the plant with a trowel to get to the point of origin. If that's not practical, you can try just tearing the sucker off and out as best you can, without dislodging the rose.

Rozcallahn, I would edit the title of this post to include the word suckers, so people could see it readily in order to respond.
