How do you deal with Quack Grass in flower or vege beds?
It comes into the garden with manure etc we use to build soils.
This year,-- I am spraying it with a product called Path Clear.
I have to be careful to not get it on the perennials.
I hear that down in the USA ---you have some sprays which are designed just for grasses?
What is your experience with them?

I had quack grass in my vege garden. Because we keep an organic garden, I use deep mulches and hand pull. Over time, the quack grass has faded to a very manageable level but it is a constant battle. Its cousin, crab grass, has now decided to sprout in the cracks along the vertical walls of the raised beds Grumbling

I have read that if you use products containing glyphosate, you should fertilize first. This causes the dormant buds of the quack grass to sprout so you have more "kill spots" exposed.

We have a product here called "Grass Getter" that is safe to use around many desirable plants. Active ingredient is Sethoxydim. It kills (very slowly) Quackgrass, crabgrass, foxtails, and bermudagrass, among others. I've used it around iris, but am somewhat hesitant to get it near my daylilies.

Thanks for the info.
I tried to get Grass Be Gone but none of the stores, here, carry it.
I did not know that one should fertilize first.
And now I'll inquire about Grass Getter.

Have you considered ordering online? Amazon carries both, although I have no idea if it can be shipped to Canada. The Grass Getter is a concentrate and a bit pricey.

Here is a link with a good article on controlling quack grass:

http://www.extension.umn.edu/y...

It also discusses fertilizing before application. Good luck - I know it takes some effort to get it under control.

Thanks, that gives me more ideas on how to get rid of it.
I am not sure that chemicals are allowed by Canadian Customs Office.

City bylaws are against goats.
But wouldn't the goats eat the good plants too?

The little snots stand outside the garden fence (and some of them ...grrrr... stand ON it) and wait for me to throw weeds to them. I now have chains and locks on my garden gates after the little beggars figured out how to open them. Rolling my eyes.
