First off I did have to say Eww! It is an amazing picture of a spider but oh it creeps me right out lol. But the real reason I came here is to see if anyone knew if this catapilar is a concern. We found it on our plum tree. It was so neat and unique looking we couldnt kill it. But we did relocate it. Wondering if anyone knows what it is. and if I see another if I should dispose of it.

It looks like he (or she) is the very special Hyalophora cecropia - the precursor to the Cecropia Moth, aka Giant Silk Moth. Reported to be North America's largest moth, the female moth can reach a 6" wing span. The caterpillar is rarely seen during the day as it is mostly nocturnal. As you found, it eats plum tree leaves as well as the leaves of maple (most common), box elder, alder, elm, ash, and birch as well as wild cherry, apple, and others. The caterpillar is really spectacular looking!

Thank you OldGardener for the ID! I cant wait to let my husband know what it is. I so wish I could get a better picture ValleyLynn. All my pictures and posts come from my phone and unfortunately I dont have a good zoom Sad We didnt keep it but relocated it away from our trees and gardens. Just had a hard time killing something so rare and beautiful when we didnt know if it was harmful or not.

Thanks Chris - Now that you mention cricket, I googled 'cricket with red head' and it does look like a red-headed bush cricket. There are tons of these in the yard.

Interesting. Do you see any damage from them? It doesn't sound like they are much of a threat.

I have almost all the foliage cut back because of rust so hard to tell but as crickets go, this is at least an attractive one.

What is the long skinny looking thing? In the second photo beside the leaf footed bug nymphs.
Yep, that is a webworm moth in the third photo.

Janet is really good at identifying the insects and bugs.
