Well I'm so glad I stumbled on this thread! I just bought 1/4# borage seed to plant in scattered places on the 42 acre place with a getaway cabin we bought 2 years ago. Was going to wait until October to sow them to avoid the scorching heat we're having right now. There are lots of spots to plant them around the cabin itself, inside the fenced yard: full sun, part sun and lots of full shade (we have mostly oaks and hickory nut trees around the cabin).

My plan is to broadcast some of the seeds in large clumps here and there in view of the cabin front porch. Then I also want to sow some clumps in the side pasture and a few at the back of the cabin where the most shade is. That way I can see where they do best over time. Hope they will eventually re-seed themselves. Currently, yellow and white wildflowers (wild daisies, and bastard cabbage) beautifully blanket the pastures from late summer-fall, so we do not mow our 42 acres except inside the fenced cabin yard. We're leasing it for 12 Brangus to graze on, which significantly reduces our property taxes. I'm hoping the pretty borage will do OK in the pasture, somewhat protected by all the taller grasses and wildflowers around it. Will keep my fingers crossed. Bluebonnets would be pretty, but they are VERY difficult to get to germinate. But I love them and may give them a go out there, too.

I can attest to that! I'm constantly pulling /hoeing seedlings or they will take over. I do water though.

I did manage to get borage to grow one year but without regular rain or damp soil, no self seed. I am going to toss seed out in December if we look like a rainy winter. If drought it's just bird seed here

They're predicting 3 days of rain down at our cabin property next week, so I'm going down tomorrow to take advantage and sow my borage seeds. Hope some are washed down to the soil to make contact in the upcoming rainy spell.

The new plants usually bloom nicely for a couple of weeks before they're eventually killed by frost. yellow and white wildflowers (wild daisies, and bastard cabbage) beautifully blanket the pastures from late summer-fall, so we do not mow our 42 acres except inside the fenced cabin yard. Well that's odd. My post above is credited to new member Fieldlion66. I also notice it's not offering me the 'edit' option, so it really thinks I didn't post it. Really odd. Must be some sort of forum software hiccup where both of us were posting (somewhere on the forums) and we hit the "finished" button at precisely the same split second, maybe? ♫♫♫doo-dee-doo-dee-doo-dee-doo-dee ♫♫♫ Twilight Zone music.

Not a seed one germinated, Evelyn. I guess the rain wasn't enough to wash it down through the grass to make soil contact. I kind of knew not many would germinate that way, but as I had ¼# of the seeds I took the lazy gardener approach just broadcasting them by hand. I'll will try it again next time we go down there (in Fall for sure). This time I'll do it right and shovel up a narrow, shallow trench along the fence to insure they make DIRECT soil contact. It's sandy soil there, so it won't take too long.
