Perhaps the most famous, or certainly most recognized hybridizer of PCI's in Santa Cruz sells his bare root cuttings to the public in the late fall and they are then rooted in water when received and soon thereafter planted. Sequim rare plants on the other hand will root their cuttings in pots and then ship the established plants in the spring at which time they can directly planted into the ground upon receipt. Oftentimes, PCI's are very fussy and delicate to manage and the rooted plants that are established and mailed in the spring I have found to be a more reliable method to increase the survival rate of the plants you wish to grow. Thus, I whole heartedly endorse both Bayview Gardens, and Sequim rare plants, but if you are a novice I would advise choosing Sequim if you are concerned about successfully growing PCI's. Of note, it's very important no matter which source you choose, getting the plants into the ground and established before the end of spring has been the only true and reliable way for me to succeed in keeping my new hybrids alive. In other words, PCI's can be grown in pots, but I have found the survival rate to be very poor in my hands.
