I was going by the tomatoes, I think, were 4.25 for singles? Not awful but I hesitated at 3.99 here.
It's tough when you know you can buy a pack of seeds and grow so many more.
Plant it and they will come.

True!

I got up to Black Creek (in PA) knowing I'd just killed a tray of pepper seedlings, lucked out with 4-packs of 'Gypsy' and 'Carmen' for less than $2. I up-potted them into 3" and 4" pots. They are now huge and starting to bloom! Time to start hardening them off.

You must have been looking at Bonnie plants. They're steep; Tractor Supply had theirs on sale trying to get rid of them. Not everyone with a large garden wants to pay a most 4 bucks a plant.

God, no, Bonnie are like 5 or 6 dollars here I think. I barely glance at those. Forget buying veg at Lowes, way too high.
There's a major greenhouse about a half hour from me, other side of the tunnel with a toll.
Plant it and they will come.

4.25 for a 3 inch single - 5.50 for a 4 inch single.
About averae around here but then it depends on where in Minn. one is buying.
Some times the closer you get to the Twin Cities, some prices are lower.
Lowes, we stopped there too on the way home, used to be low priced, now they are nastily high.
Bachman's some times is suprisingly low and they are where, what I call the Twin Cities suburbs really start/ed. (You are still 10 miles from downtown, but the rural scene is gone.)

I would have liked to hit more garden centers but I spent my wad, and it was getting later; drove home in the worst hours 3:30 - 5:00. Shrug!

Slugs have been eating on two of my pepper plants. It has been very wet with lots of rain here this Spring.

I hope these grow out of it and not die but we will see. I do put out the Sluggo or I would have no plants.

I generally like open pollinated varieties since I have the option to save seed, but Im not adverse to using hybrids if the disease resistance is significant, and the fruit are much better than op varities. I saw on one of my favorite Youtube channels, where he raved over a banana pepper variety called Bounty. I decided to try it, and he is right. The plant is super healthy, no disease at all, the fruits are huge, and the production is insane. This one is a keeper.

@ocalagal Wow!! Thumbs up
I agree with you about OP varieties but I also will do hybrid peppers on occasion because I don't save pepper seed. (I need to start, I guess) This year I'm doing Fooled You jalapeno and Merlot bell pepper; both are hybrid.

I am back w/ some major updates! Hurray!

Here are some pictures of my current indoor-grown peppers:

The top one is a Carolina Reaper Red Mini, the bottom a Bahamian Goat:
Thumb of 2024-05-18/Arrowhead12/48af63

I was not expecting leaf size to be this large!! I didn't even hit 'em w/ much nitrogen!

Here's my Coyote Zan White:

My XXX Yellow:

And my variegated Ninfadora:

This is my first time growing capsicum chinense indoors - but whatever I'm doing seems to be working thus far. All have budded, w/ the Coyote Zan White already beginning to fruit!

I'm actually quite pleased w/ the results, I wasn't expecting much, TBH.

I've only used a diluted liquid fertilizer on all of these, (like a third of what they recommend), and then when they began showing budding, I switched and gave a half-strength dose of Tiger Bloom.

Yeah, so this is kind of an experiment, I guess! I only used a few 40$ CAD Amazon LED panel lights, can't imagine what would happen if I had superior hardware.

Very happy!

Are chinense varieties supposed to produce such large leaves? The Coyote Zan White has 'normal' sized leaves, but the other plants are all massive. In my (brief) 5 years of growing peppers, I certainly haven't seen them this big in my garden.

Hope everyone is well!!

Depends on the pepper variety as to leaf size - and plant height as well- don't grow your varieties, not sure what you will see, chuckl. Any blooms yet?

Peppers
The Coyote Zan White has about 10 or so little flowers that have opened, and one has already began to fruit, I am hoping things continue to go well - if need be, now that it's late spring here, I can transfer them outside.

All but the Ninfadora have many buds ready to go, the Ninfa is too young still, I think, I started it later.

I was 'successful' w/ my 'test' indoor grow I did at the end of last year, but those were all annuums, mostly ornamentals - so fruit size was small.

The ninfa makes little berry sized fruits, so I'm sure that will be fine, as well as the Carolina Reaper Mini, but I'm gonna have to keep an eye on the Bahamian Goat - I hear that plant's peppers can get quite large. Remains to be seen how well they'll do under my lights.

Today I dusted for worms. I don't like the dust getting on the produce so I picked this beauty before dusting the plant. Into a hot dog it'll go! Drooling

When I noticed it this morning all I could say was not again!!!

My problems started with cutworms chewing several peppers down to the stems. Sometimes they will actually recover from being totally devoured like that but not this time.

But since then, some assassin bugs have hatched and they are all over the garden munching any pests they can find. I'm good with that. Smiling
