The second picture is one of the big goldenrods, Solidago altissima, Solidago gigantea or similar species.

I don't know, can't see the flowers clearly enough to tell for certain and the rest of the plant doesn't ring any bells.

The leaves look similar, Sue, but the buds don't look like the ones in the Database.
