Fruit of Mahonia oiwakensis

Mahonia fruits look delicious and are edible. They're bitter though, and taste best sweetened in a pie - yum! Or jelly.

They look too beautiful to pick to just eat though, I'd rather keep them! Do birds like them? Wonderful banner of things I never get to see, Keith!

No, Nancy, I've never picked one of them. I think the birds do eat them but they really love getting the nectar from the yellow flowers in May, our autumn - especially New Zealand's native birds like the tui (the black one) and the korimako. Straight out my bathroom window!

Nice! Hurray!

I have Mahonia in my garden and they have blue berries, but not in a big cluster like that and I had no idea they were edible.

Thank You! for sharing the extra photos. I tip my hat to you.
Of course I talk to myself; sometimes I need expert advice!
