I ordered 20 rhizomes from HIPS today. I just went down the list and ordered the first 20. I figured since they have a reputation for not actually sending what you ordered anyway that I would save myself some time. Besides, my goal is to go from the oldest known iris to around 1930 or so. That will take me awhile to do I suppose and will take up lots of space but at least I have a plan right? LOL

Well, I could think of WAY worse things to spend time and money on... Whistling I admire your passion for the oldies. Personally, they are my most favorite. They remind me of my Granny when I was knee-high to a grasshopper. Lovey dubby

I have a few ordered from HIPS that have done well, don't know if I will be ordering more this year because it is too annoying to not get what you order. Superstition has a nice selection of historics and I may order from them this year.

HIPS is dependant on people having the correct iris. People who are contemplating donating to the sale next year should really work on ID.

I agree , So far I've only had one "oops" from the rhisome sale( should have been Crimson King, but was really Drady), so I can't complain very much. I've had more than that from com. growers. It's easy to make a mistake, both on ID, and (,because the rascals run up and down the row at night, I think!) the clumps intermingling. I actually enjoy the process of "putting a name" to the NOIDs! I guess not everyone cares about names, and that's ok. Just enjoy them for their beauty! But "No-Names" seem to really bug me! Makes me feel good when the mystery is solved ....Arlyn I tip my hat to you.

Oh, you misunderstood. I meant that you don't always get the iris that you ordered because they were out of it. They do a lot of replacing I hear. This is my first time to order from them so we will see what happens. I have not heard of may complaints on the wrong cultivar being sent just not getting the one you wanted because they didn't have enough.

The irises are grown by 'gardeners' not sales nurseries so only so many of a plant are available.

Oh I know. I am not complaining by any means. I rearranged the list, ordered the 20 oldest cultivars and am hoping for the best. I will not be disappointed with anything I receive. The way I look at it I will be helping keep HIPS alive, I will be getting all historic irises, no matter the cultivar I receive and I will be a little further along on my collection.
The only negative is maybe I should not have ordered so many. I have outstanding orders from other places and I really can't quite remember how many I have coming. So with 20 more on the way I may have over done it a bit. Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing
I would really like to someday be a HIPS garden, we will see. That is a might lofty goal for a newby. I have only been "into" irises for 5 years now so I have a lot to learn and a long way to go. But I have figured out that the oldies is the way I want to go. I want to help insure they are kept alive and thriving and not lost forever.

I love solving the mystery too Arlyn. I have two that are killing me. I know they are pre 1996 but that is all I know.

I think that is pretty close Arlyn but the beards look to be took yellow. Mine has more of a brown or mustard beard. I may never know.

I found this one at irisparadise.com but it is the closest I have come.Thumb of 2013-06-25/enidcandles/6e25b7 although it's beards really are not dark enough either.

Oh sorry, that's not what I meant! I meant I only got a few of my top choices, and substitutes for the others.

Only once a year during their rhizome sale which is going on now. There is an Icon at the top left of their page that says "2013 Rhizome Sale"
There is a minimum order of 5 rhizomes, a limit of one of each cultivar and they are 5.50 each which includes shipping.
If you have any other questions, just ask.

Lori,

I have no idea how close a guess it is, since I don't grow it, but your second NOID made me think "Stairway to Heaven."
