Welcome! Virginia.

There are many irises that resemble this. And it could very well be an unnamed seedling.

It very much resembles the basic species: "Iris germanica." You can see several pictures here along with some interesting notes about this scientific name.

Many named cultivars look similar. You can search old historic irises at the Historical Iris Preservation Society website: https://historiciris.org/galle...

A few similar pictures from the historic iris website and from the garden.org database:

There are many others. To identify the iris, you should purchase a known cultivar from a reputable vendor and grow it next to your NOID and compare time of bloom, height, color, pattern, etc. Often finding a place to purchase the known cultivar can be hard when it comes to older irises. I think in this case, you will have to just call it "my beautiful purple mystery iris" and just enjoy the blooms! Rolling my eyes.

I agree with Laurie. It may be almost too hard to tell

However, I wonder if it may be the simple iris germanica. I have noticed around here, the most common irises were irises that are super popular historics. If these irises were already on your property, I have a hunch it is highly likely to be whatever the most popular purple that looks like this was at the time it was planted.

Iris germanica fits that bill to me. No way to prove the name without growing an ID next to it and comparing when they bloom.
Does anyone know how to stop spending money on flowers?

Laurie, THANK YOU so much for your reply! All that you said makes perfect senseā€¦ I can't remember where I got this iris from, but thank you for the resource and the pictures that I can start tracking down. I also love your "Mystery" name suggestion! Thank you again, ... thanks also to Monty Riggles for the follow up confirmation ... Sheryl In Virginia
