Thread OP
Sarasota, FL
Need advice: my neighbor and I are in hot Sarasota, Florida. She and I want to grow a vegetable garden (crop share). I have the land and space. We are going to have good dirt delivered. Our current goal is to plant in September unless otherwise advised. Heat for the plants and us is an issue. The area has been cleared (photo). So far I'm using tents, trees, and umbrellas to help with shade and prevent burning. The soil is very sandy. Should we consider raised beds rather than putting plants/seeds in the ground? Should we wait until the Fall to deliver dirt or get everything ready now, at the beginning of May? We're still at the planning stage. Thank you for any advice.

Raised beds are often employed to promote drainage...
Doesn't look to me like drainage would be helpful in your sand.

If you could go ahead and mulch to keep the organics from being burned out of the soil by the hot subtropical sun, would help.

There are plants that might be worth planting now...

Stuff like ginger, brugmansia, turmeric, canna...

So vegetables?

Maybe plant some 'winter' squash and watermelon & sweet potatoes while you wait for cooler weather.

Lots of Florida people on site, maybe some recommendations coming from someone closer, soon...
