Ok. I guess I AM confused. Is the overall height of the plant the mound height plus the inflorescence height?

Did you notice how the breeder discovered Bright Star? Per the patent description a partially variegated pup was separated from the mother plant. After rooting the pup, the breeder "...removed its growing point in order to encourage rapid basal side shoot production." A pup of the pup was then selected as 'Walbristar'! Now that's an "Idea" I'd love to read.

I did read about the discovery thing but most of it went right over my head. I do not know what is the growing point, so I am not seeing how to remove it. LOL.

I read part of it here, but do not understand about the 'YUCA' mistake. ZOOM!!! **insert emotion for over my head** Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing

@woofie, Given the inflorescence grows to 5 feet, that would be the tallest the plant typically gets (overall height).

Look at it this way, this is how the size is listed now:
Foliage Mound Height: 24-36 inches
Inflorescence Height: 5 feet
Plant Spread: 3 feet

vs. only height and width:
Plant Height: 3 to 5 feet (or 2 to 5 feet Confused )
Plant Spread: 3 feet

In the 1st example (overall) Plant height isn't necessary. We list the likely heights of the foliage mound and inflorescence/bloom stalk[/url].

The big problem with overall Plant height [u]ranges
is there isn't a standard way of listing them. What makes sense for a yucca (3' (foliage) to 5' (bloom)) doesn't make sense for a Joe Pye Weed.

Here's an example with an Astilbe. A. is overall Plant height. B. is Inflorescence height. C. is Foliage mound height.

woofie said:So, am I correct in assuming that you are including the mound height in the inflorescence height? Just thinking that it could get confusing.

eclayne said:No, these are separate size ranges. For instance Astilbe 'Amethyst'.

Instead of a plant height of 12 to 36 inches we have:
Foliage Mound Height: 12 to 24 inches
Inflorescence Height: 30 to 36 inches

I realize these are fuzzy numbers, but we see the bloom rises approximately 12 to 18 inches above the foliage.
....
Is there one that is particularly confusing Woofie?

Edit: Maybe it would be better if I also filled in the Plant height?

See? I told you it could get confusing. But then I'm easily confused. Your original reply seemed to be saying that the mound height and the inflorescence height were separate things. Just trying to get this clear in my tiny mind. Smiling

** insert __ Blinking __ emotion here**

Let me see if you can use a Hosta to evaluate my understanding. The foliage is 12" high so that is foliage mound and the scape is 36 inches. So the whole plant is not 36 inches tall, that would be confusing. Just the scape coming out of the mound is 36 inches tall. So we have a mound which is 12" and a scape which is 36 inches so would the inflorescence be 48 inches? Which is better because we know the whole plant is not 48 inches but it is the mound plus a scape?

I agree with Susan's explanation. The mound foliage height plus the height of the scape would equal the inflorescence height.

After the mound foliage height and the inflorescence height have been entered, there's really no need to type anything on the "Plant height" line, although the plant height could be listed as 12-48 inches (or 1-4 feet).

In view of the wording of this portion of the data form, however, I have to contradict myself: As worded, the form seems to be asking for the foliage mound height (12 inches) and the inflorescence height (36 inches). If this is the case, then information should be entered on all three lines, and the plant height should be entered as 48 inches. This seems to be a case of unfortunate wording more than anything else. Maybe the categories should be listed as "Height of foliage mound" and "Height of plant in bloom."

Thanks @Zuzu, after re-reading this it seems that Evan is saying the plant height and the inflorescence height is the same thing. So you do not put anything under plant height, like you said.
So my hosta which is 36 inches tall when blooming, has a mound of 12 inches and inflorescence height of 36 inches equal to the plant height. So you do not add them together.

@eclayne, sorry Evan, I must have given you a headache. *Blush* It seems to make sense now but I don't know why I was having a problem before. Pay me no mind, I am slow. Please, take the rest of the day off.
