I found a photo of how I slit the basket for the caladiums shown in a post a few days ago. You can barely see the bulbs emerging from the slits. Hope it helps.

Very clever, Sandi. Such a pretty patio, too.

My Thai Caladiums are putting on some more red leaves. This is The Pearl, but it's looking a lot more like a ruby, I think.

Beautiful caladiums! I'll have to find some of those before next spring! Thanks for patio mention, Elaine. I laid that rock patio by myself 30 years ago while DH was out of town.

Bubbles said:Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata' is a variegated ginger. I didn't add it to the database, because there were so many other photos. It blooms in late spring and the flowers looks like little orchids. Tough ginger that takes abuse.

@bubbles, I just took a closer look at the photos in the DB for Variegated Shell Ginger (Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata'). Most of them are pics taken at a nursery. Sure would be nice to have another in situ pic. Green Grin!

I'll see if I can find a good photo, but I don't think mine would compare to Horntoad's. That blooming ginger is awesome!

Horntoad's pic is awesome. I just stared at it for a while. Mine has been in the bed with M. basjoo which gets 4 to 5 hours of mid-day sun and is throwing it's second leaf! I think I'll plant it out in a few days.

Four hour of mid-day sun here is searing! Nearly everything in our backyard is suffering from the intense heat. I'm afraid to fertilize anything until the temp goes down. Plumerias are loving the heat, but I'm constantly watering pots.

This one came back for a couple of years. I bring the pots in and keep them cool and water once a month or two. They die down but come back when I put the pot outside in the summer.

I never know what to plant with those white Caladiums, but that is a lovely combination.

Dave I bought those Thai ones as plants at Lowe's a couple of years ago. I do see them occasionally there, but I've only seen the bulbs for sale at McLure & Zimmerman. www.mzbulb.com

They had a few interesting Thai varieties, and I'm pretty sure they had 'The Pearl' last time I looked, but they only sell them in the spring. Their fall catalog is sitting right here on my desk, no Caladiums or EE's listed. (they usually have a few interesting EE's like C. Nancy's Revenge and Blue Hawaii in the spring, too)

Btw, that particular one has 'sisters' that are very similar, one called Siam Moon, and another Thai Noon. Shrug! There's a lot of hybridizing of Caladiums going on in Thailand, and possibly not much control of registration for names.

@Cinta, I wish I hadn't thrown out my Poy/Amazonica. What is the yellow flowered plant? Really nice combo.

I have a few Thai's (I think) in 4-5 hours of sun and they seem to be happy. They don't seem to be as robust as the non-Thais though.

Thank you evan. Why did you throw away your poly? It will lose its leaves in the winter sometime but it comes back when it goes back out in the summer heat.

The other plant is Aphelandra ,(Zebra Plant). It likes so much humidity in the winter I keep it in a terrarium with my Orchids.

Elaine, I use a lot of white when I want drama. I use a lot of white in my house also. I love white. White in pots do good if you go with one other color. I have done white/pink, white/purple.

White/Black.
