I wash all dirt from them, give them a spray with 10% bleach water, let them dry for one or two days, in the shade . I don't wrap the rhizomes, but use
shredded or crumpled newspaper to pack around them( or excelsior, if I have it) to help absorb any remaining moisture, and to stop them from shifting around in the box. I generally cut the leaves to 4"-6", but leave as many of the roots as possible, but some folks trim the roots back, also....Arlyn

I trim the leaves back to 5"-6" in a fan shape, and trim the roots back to 3" or so, and use a Sharpie pen to write ID on a leaf. Then I wash the rhizomes (not leaves) in 10% bleach water, let them dry thoroughly, and pack them in a priority box using shredded paper to stabilize them in the box. Once the box is all taped up, I use scissors to poke holes in all four sides of the box for ventilation.

Sometimes it takes me a week or two to dig all the Irises that are going to one person. Once they have dried from being washed, it's no problem for them to wait in a dry location for shipment.

Hope this helps.

We write ID on leaves. In addition use my string tags with name attached to rhizome.
