From the pictures I've seen here, my guess is that it is Hens and Chicks 'Asteroid', but I have no idea. I'd like to know what I have here, thanks in advance!

Hi Pat one of the downsides of semps is that they often look so much alike especially when they're chicks , so its not likely that anyone could ID your semp Shrug!
Do you have others besides this one?

Hi Pat, Greg is right, unfortunately once an ID tag is lost, it's pretty much impossible to identify which semp it is because they change so much during the seasons - size, shape, colors, etc. But that's sure a cute little one!

Oooh, yah that makes sense. I got if from a resident at the property I work at, he said I could just take one. He started out with one about 20 years ago, and now he has a bunch of them. I should have asked him what kind they were:

That is a cool avatar, didn't see the hummer until Chris said something! Also Pat, be careful, you're about to fall into the wonderland rabbit hole with words like "I'm warming up to Sempervivum!" haha there's always room for more/new semp obsessed people on this forum! nodding Rolling on the floor laughing Rolling on the floor laughing
By the way, the photos look like a semp that I call "common" sempervivum, (there isn't really such a thing, but I call it that, since in many of the older homes around here (Seattle) they have this type of semp, they can get quite large and are very prolific and have many color changes in the fall/winter Hurray!

Thanks Chris! I'm very happy to be here, learning alot, and getting a lot of great help from really nice folks here Smiling Smiling Smiling lmao Greg! Yep, it may be true that I've gotten bit by the Semp bug...er, well, plant, lol Hilarious!

The guy who let me have one of them, as you can see in the pics have them all over his patio area, has a total green thumb. I was just stunned by that one pic that shows them growing in very little dirt on the patio concrete slab!

I just hope this one survives tho, I'm a sucker for hard-luck cases. I found it laying on its side and not in the ground. The root stem looked pretty sickly, but I'm hopeful that it hangs in there Sticking tongue out

Oh! And thanks for the compliment on my avatar, I love hummingbirds! My whole life I always loved the cardinal (imagine that, my state bird, lol), but ever since I've started getting into gardening, I adore the hummingbird! I got an extension cord for my web cam, so I get close ups of my hummingbird visitors. Here is the male I've named 'Perch' Smiling http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSXlLfVxfRM

That video was shot on fourth of July...I'd tell all to turn it up, but somebody lit a bunch of fireworks and scared Perch away, eek! Smiling Here is Zippy, the female. You can turn up the volume with her, no fireworks Smiling http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeC55qL7YLw

Yep, I love it, and have tons of footage. I had to cover the light on the camera that comes on when I turn it on with electrical tape---it was spooking them lol

Oh wow, just found this new thread. Hi Pat, and a big Welcome! to the Sempervivum Forum.
Beautiful green semp you have, and it looks like it is going to reward you with lovely watermarking on the leaves. Lovey dubby
Won't be any time at all and it will start making itself at home. Hurray!

The hummer is wonderful. We love ours. Lovey dubby

Hey Lynn!! Big Grin and thank you for the big welcome, woot woot! hehe Smiling

Thanks on compliments on my semp, I just hope it can grow well! As stated, I am worried about the root stem of it--it really looked unhealthy, but the rest of the semp looks ok as pictured in initial post of this thread.

But with only what I know about semps, my understanding is to keep the watering routine around once, maybe twice a week if the temperature is too high? At this moment, my belief is to treat this almost like a cactus--very little water needed "frame of mind"? Also at this moment, I have it in a good draining setup, and it seems to be ok. Yay for me, a new plant to love! Lovey dubby Big Grin

I think I attracted a third hummer---I saw Perch feeding, then another hummer fought him off and fed, and I know it wasn't Zippy. Zippy never ever 'sits and feeds'...looking to get video footage of this possible third guest, and after observing, I have named him 'Spec'(Speculates, lol). Zippy and Perch know what's up, but Spec feeds and spends a second or two looking around at all my plants and the whole set up, while Zippy and Perch already know the landscape already, lol Sticking tongue out

I so want to fire the landscapers at the property I work at where this Semp garden is (pictured above)! They did mulching, and didn't take a whole lot of care:

Thumb of 2013-07-24/Pat72/47b01f

Grr! Grumbling

I told the resident who is the owner of these Semps if it was ok to clean them up, as I feared being buried in mulch will kill them. He had no problem with me doing that, so I did. I took a gas-powered leaf blower, and here is how they look now:

I have to observe the wishes of my company, but at the same time, I'm not going to just sit here and let these Semps die Sad Do you think they will be ok now? Is there more I can do to make sure the mulch won't kill them? I am tempted to buy them from this guy to be honest Big Grin

Good rescue job Pat. Amazing how much some "professional" landscapers don't know.
