Hello all, these two lilies are, I think, either " Betty Sturley", "Ypsilanti", or maybe the parent L. Henryi citrinum. I am not sure what is what, all are new to me and I obviously didn't label well. Thumb of 2013-07-23/speciesrok/04682f

waitwait! This is L. henryi citrinum flowering for me... and it didn't fade to white edges:

But then... speciesrok's lily doesn't really look like the pictures of Betty Sturley and Ypsilanti that I've seen either....

Is there much variation in citrinum? Confused

Hi speciesrok, could you id your avatar for us? *curious*

Agree. Louise seems to be the closest match.

However, my Louise, does not color change with age hardly at all, until it withers. Sorry, don't have a pics of a young versus old flower.
This one is about two days old. The stamens are super long on this cultivar.

Hi Lefty. It is good to see all the names I used to see on that other site, a year or three back. I don't think it is Louise because I have never had it or even heard of it. I did however recently add L. henryi citrinum and the two hybrids. I also noticed in the photos of L. henryi citrinum on this site, some white edges. I will find out from those I got the bulbs rom which is which. I hope, and let you all know.Thumb of 2013-07-23/speciesrok/f93c6b Here is another bloom to confuse the issue some more

Hi David. I let my subscription laps at DG just this year. Since I won't post photos, it seems a waste.

I'm afraid the real identity may never be known. Wrong cultivars/species are being sent around even more so now. Every year I discover more plants that I have that have been misidentified by the source, not just lilies.

Really, I look at all the L. henryi type blooms nowadays, and I'd rather just think of them as a henryi/rosthornii complex. So many have been bred to such extremes, yet still are derived from only these two species, or even from each separately, yet do not look at all like anything one might find in the wild. No one would think of modern zinnias as a wild species; similarly, it is my opinion that these modern bred henryi, rosthornii or henryi/rosthornii seedlings be in the same category.

It is interesting (and even more confusing) to note that in the Flora of China, L. henryi is only orange, while L. rosthornii can be orange or yellow.

Appears that it's the mysterious L. fargesii!

Mysterious only in that people seem to have a hard time growing it. Most pics are of very tiny florets that barely make it to bloom stage. In fact most just think it is normally a tiny flowered species, but no. David's looks quite well grown. Mine had 2 inch flowers at the completely recurved stage.

Rick, you had L. fargesii flowers two inches across?? Mine are less than an inch across, and this is the second year blooming on these two plants. Another, in an even shadier location, did not reappear for a third year. Maybe two inch flowers are what full sun can do? Maybe this fall I'll see if I can dig up that third bulb and move it to a sunnier location.

Also Rick, thanks for coming out and saying what I think a lot of people might be thinking, that it is hard to say for sure what these henryi-type lilies are. One thing about these particular bulbs, they were given to me by the hybridizer of the hybrids,I think, (C.K.), and a board member of NALS, (not that that necessarily means anything). Just saying that I didn't order them from a vendor.

Your L. fargesii may still be small, but it looks a lot healthier than most pics I've seen. Mine was a bulb from Chen Yi a decade ago. Had it for 3-4 years when it first flowered. It looked like the pics I usually see:

This is what you have to look forward to:

Yes, mine was in full sun (with mulch, of course), although I think it would have preferred some shade. Most years, the top would die back in mid to late summer. In my clay based soil, the bulb rotted one year during a particularly wet summer. Same with my L. taliense var. kaichen. It had 12 blooms that year.
