Has anyone ever tried growing this as a standard or small 'tree'?

I don't think it lends itself to that kind of treatment, but with a lot of care it might work if you tie the long stems to a stake for support and then let the top stems flare out. Smiling

I prefer to cut them back on occasion, because it seems to look better and bloom more that way.

I missed cutting one back and decided to leave it for a while. It was scraggly, thin, and the blooms were sparse. A wind caught it several times and knocked it down. So I clipped it aggressively and it bounced back. I wouldn't recommend it.
I volunteer in a garden here that has dozens of Rock Rose bushes. They cut them back all the time and they are prolific with blooms.
