And to think it all began so innocently when my husband saw an ad in Wayside Gardens catalog, back in '92, and asked if I'd like to grow "a few" clematises.

And then he did it again the next year when they had different clematises available as a packaged deal! So between '92 and '93 we ended up with 18. The other 82+ I can blame on myself and the internet.

There are more than 100 different names. I hope I never get personally acquainted with many of those I don't already have.

I don't know exactly how many different types/kinds there are but you could spend a relaxing week by clicking on each one offered by Silver Star Vinery:

We have 1733 in the database, but there are many more that were never added because it's unlikely they'll ever be sold here. There's a lot of hybridizing going on in Russia, for example, but few of those cultivars make it to the West.

It's just too easy to find something beautiful in each of them.

Years ago I saw this one but was told it probably would never make it to market in this country.

Wow! If Sweet Autumn Clematis had those anthers, I wouldn't have minded its malicious plan to overwhelm everything else on my property.

My favorite is Josephine. I have several of them scattered around the garden, and they seem to take turns blooming. While one takes a rest, the others are in bloom.

I have a feeling I will love Diamantina, but the two I've bought so far have produced nothing but foliage to date.

So would I. Really beautiful. Love Florida Seiboldii, but it was too cold to overwinter here. I have "Josephine" scattered all over, also. I do the same with "Crystal Fountain"

'Crystal Fountain' is gorgeous. I have two of them. One thrives and the other just exists with flowers at the end of May and then nothing more.

I'll move the one that probably wants a better spot.

I love that Florida Seiboldii... tried to find it here but way too expensive and i am not sure it'd survive our winters.
From the ones I've got (about 4-5) my fave is Miss Bateman.
SO far!

I like that you have several and they bloom at different times. My diamantina hasn't bloomed yet either

My favorite clematis is generally whatever is blooming in the moment, because they are all awesome at that point aren't they?

Thumb of 2013-12-08/dirtdorphins/6d042a Thumb of 2013-12-08/dirtdorphins/ee488b Thumb of 2013-12-08/dirtdorphins/7d437e

However, I have only recently 'discovered' the non-vining ramblers and small flowered varieties and I have been really impressed so far with how these new (baby) plants have performed in their first season. Hands down, my favorite is 'Arabella', for non-stop bloom spring-summer-fall, even in the shade.

'Trikatrei' put on the best show for sheer number of flowers, and outgrew it's temporary trellis. Hopefully, it's companion rose will eventually grow up too.

My favorite color and shape is 'Rooguchi'; second favorite color is 'Venosa Violacea'--but I didn't take a decent picture of either.
'Madame Julia Correvon', 'Maria Cornelia', and 'jouiniana praecox' were stellar, but I neglected to even attempt a photograph to prove it, for some unknown reason.
I had quite a few snail casualties and others are still settling in and thinking about flowering next year, but here are a few more pics of some new ones for me this year:

'Juuli'

'Pamiat Serdtsa'

'Durandii'

'Moonfleet'

Welcome to ATP, Dirtdorphins. Cool username!

Trikatrei really appeals to me. That's a great photo.
