The Runaway Balls

By Bubbles
April 15, 2010

My husband surprised me one day with two large stone balls for the front garden. He had to have two men help him place them. I just loved them peeking out of the salvias near the sidewalk. Our neighbors would walk up the hill and take a rest, letting their kids sit on top of the balls. This is a story of how the balls wound up hidden in our backyard.

Photos? It's not often you have a motorcycle, a police car, a fire truck, and a gaggle of firemen, cops, and curious neighbors on your street. Of course I wanted to document it. You just can't make this stuff up...

Thanks for backyard comment, Rannveig. There are more backyard photos in TX Cubit under..Show Us Your Gardens...would love for you to take a peek!

Thanks for looking! I remember when you first joined Cubits. I even made my non-gardening husband look at your garden...fabulous.

We have a local ranch that has 2 HUGE balls at it's entrance, they stand about 3.5' tall, but look odd by themselves. I like your grouping.

I think the really big ones are used at some of the electronic stores' entrances to deter smash and grabbers!

Great story! Smiling LOL I have a question, though. Is that a bear trap you have attached to the balls in the back yard? That could discourage any vandalism. ;)

Gosh, you're observant! It is some kind of animal trap...I found it in a box of antiques from my aunt. I put it there as a joke right after the caper...to illustrate what would happen if the balls went missing again. When I wrote the article, I needed a photo and pulled that one up. Was too tired to hunt for a more "appropriate" one, so left it.

It's a shame you must keep them hidden. Are they from Costa Rica?

I think it's a hoot! It will definitely get your point accross that those are to be looked at and not stolen. Smiling Like anyone should ever have to make that kind of point about their property. Jeez.

I think the balls are Mexican in origin, moved from there on a flat bed truck! I did find the article fascinating tho. Had not seen anything about the balls of Costa Rica before. Very interesting.

Ticker, we've talked about putting the balls back in the front garden, set in cement. Just haven't asked the insurance company about it yet. We've lived in the same house for over 30 years, and ball rolling has been the only vandalism we can ever remember. There must be some kind of magnetic pull to a teenage boy to remove 'em! No use tempting fate again.

Thanks for reading it! The Camaro is gone...replaced with a small truck shortly after the tree falling. I just hope his dad learned a lesson...".just because your insurance might get canceled if you make another claim, that doesn't mean you can intimidate someone else into paying for damage."
