I purchased this Philodendron with a label that said Philodendron 'Lemons And Limes'. The employees at the small nursery didn't know anything about it just saying that it came in with that label.%#@!% There's a Philodendron cultivar 'Lemon Lime' in the ATP database that looks to me like a variety of the heart leaf P. hederaceum : Philodendron (Philodendron 'Lemon Lime')

My plant has more elongated leaves than the one in the database and I'm wondering if mine is just a more mature form, or some other hybrid? I've googled and searched on-line for Philo's with the name Lemon Lime, Lemon and Lime etc. but I'm not having much luck. There's another listing in the database for a Philodendron 'Lemonade', but no photo's or info.

I can just keep this labeled P. 'Lemons and Limes' but I'd really like to know a correct hybrid variety/name if at all possible. Here are a few photo's of my plant; any ideas or suggestions? Thanks so much!

Lin,

This looks a lot like your plant at various sizes and ages. Check it out. It seems as if Philodendron cordatum "Lemon Lime' is what this plant is known as.

Dave: Thanks, that looks just like my plant but I'm not certain P. cordatum is correct. When I do a search for Philodendron cordatum 'Lemon Lime' many of the responses show the smaller heart leaf Philodendron so I'm confused.

This is the one photo in the ATP database, a different plant than what I've got:

We only have one listing for P. cordatum in the database, no cultivars:

Sandi: Thanks so much for that link, the description and photo's describe my plant exactly. Either the photo in the database is incorrect, or there are two different varieties of Philodendron Lemon Lime'.

Lin if you look carefully on the link that Sandi provided it appears that this is a variety of P. Domesticum. There is a statement "The new cultivar was discovered as a naturally occurring, spontaneous mutation, among several thousand random tissue cultures of Philodendron domesticum. I am pretty sure that your plant is the one in the photo of the link that I sent you and I am pretty convinced that this is a domesticum sport of some sort. Sorry about confusing you with my initial cultivar suggestion.

If there are 2 plants in that pot (Caption: 'Lemon Lime' is the light colored plant), doesn't it looks close to yours Lin?

Allow me to add more confusion! Sticking tongue out

So I bought a bright yellow philo some time ago... It was label P. moonlight, after purchasing it I googled it, it was mismarked, moonlight is a self header, what I have vines, and looks alot like the plant in question...
After much fruasteration I drug it to Briansbotanicals, Brian took one look and says something to the effect of:
It's not moonlight but likely a hybrid with moonlight, he goes in to say that he's been seeing them come out of Thailand for a few years, normally all mismarked as moonlight, moonlight is very popular but being a slow moving selfheader, demand always exceeded supply, so it seems someone wanting to make a buck deceided my plant could be called that!
All they had to do at that point was get a few in ground over there where they grow sooo fast, give a year or so, and take all the mismarked cuttings they like...

It sounds like a likely story, and Brian is very knowledgeable about philos, so I have no choice but to believe him...I'll dig my plant out later and snap a few pics to compare!

Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!

Dave: Yes, I noticed that it said it was a naturally occurring form of P. domesticum and yes, mine looks identical to the plants pictured in the first link you provided; maybe it was the sp. cordatum that was confusing me.

Evan: the photo in the database (even the light colored leaves) look more rounded and heart shaped than the leaves on my plant which are larger and elongated in shape. When I zoom way in on the plant in the database I don't see the pinkish red petioles on any of those leaves as described for P. 'Lemon Lime'. It does make sense though that the plant pictured in the database would be called Lemon Lime because of the two shades of leaves being the colors of lemons and limes. Green Grin!

Swayback: I have, or had Philodendron 'Moonlight' (I need to go in search and see if it's still around), it's definitely a self heading type of Philo. If Brian said your plant that resembles mine is a hybrid of Moonlight, I'd trust his expertise. I will be interested to see your photo's for comparison to my plant.

I sure appreciate everyone's input here! Thanks so much!

Lin, just wanted to clarify; there are 2 different plants in the pot in Song of Joy's photo, note her caption. Given that, this isn't a plant with light and dark leaves. That's as far as I can go in helping though, sorry. Green Grin!

Here are a few link re: P. domesticum which, while not technically an accepted name, appears to be a hybrid philo developed in cultivation.

Lol. Big Grin Well I am beginning to think that Brian is probably right. It seems as if there are a lot of same plants out there that are labeled differently. Lin I just posted an Aglaonema that came to me from Glasshouse Works that is labeled 'Black Cherry' but it looks like an identical plant to your Aglaonema 'Crete'. Confused Interesting to say the least. Whatever the Philo is it is a beautiful addition.

Evan: Thanks, I'd missed the caption in SongofJoy's photo in the database that it was two separate plants in that pot!

Dave: LOL, I agree that plants are mislabeled all the time; some of the same exact plant with two totally different names, others that are of one genus with a label for an entirely different genus! I was told that most of the large wholesale nurseries here in Florida have workers who don't understand or speak english and they quite often put the wrong tag/label on plants. I guess there's no quality control when it comes to plant labeling sometimes. I was at Home Depot a year or so ago back when they carried a lot of the Exotic Angel plants (a nursery near Orlando). I was buying a Hoya plant that had a label in it for Sansevieria and I noticed many, many plants that were labeled incorrectly. When I went to check out I mentioned it to the cashier and she asked me if I minded waiting a sec because the lady from the nursery was there and she wanted me to point out to her the ones I thought were mislabeled. The nursery person came over and I showed her the Hoya plant I purchased with the incorrect tag and she asked me to walk back with her to point out others. She walked around pulling tag after tag after tag and she thanked me for bringing it to her attention. She said there are times when customers will pull a tag off a plant to read the information and then stick it back into the nearest plant at hand, which may be wrong; but she also said that they had employees at the nursery who made labeling mistakes now and again ... she was just stunned to find so many mislabeled in that one shipment.

By the way, regarding that Aglaonema 'Crete' ... I've seen it spelled both 'Crete' and 'Creta' and I have no clue which is actually correct!

I'll photo the tag in the morning. As far as Glasshouse Works website it is a maze and a nightmare. The place was run for years by two guys. One died unexpectedly last year. Everything moves in slow motion there. It took almost 7 weeks to get my order; however, they have plants that are not available anywhere else and when you get the plants the packing is the best I have seen and the plants are super and really a nice size. I don't know how long this place can continue as the partner who died was the main proppgator. It's been around a long time and it would be sad to see it go. If you can just put up with the website and can be very patient with delivery you won't be disappointed with the plants.

Does this look like it?

It's on eBay right now, labeled Thai sunrise.

It looks an awful lot like the one I have...
