Plant Shippers Save the Earth Idea

By ShadyGreenThumb

I know many plant shippers use boxes to shop their plants around the world. Here is a way to reuse a shipping carton that has print on the outside, or maybe has one too many labels on it.

We get so many items in boxes and this is a great way to repurpose them, rather than having to purchase one. Thanks so much,
.

I reuse plain boxes, but never would have thought of this idea--terrific!

"Inside-out" would never have occurred to me! Thank you!

I've read that you can use an iron on low heat to soften the glue on labels so you can peel them all off. I don't own an iron, never have ironed any clothes, and used irons aren't all that cheap in Goodwill! Also, I always assumed that it would leave a sticky, gooey surface behind.

Thanks for this idea!

Just don't do with with Post Office Boxes. It is a no no and you can get in trouble if caught.

Yes the USPO has learned that people have been using their strong Tyvek envelopes inside out. So now they print their name on both sides of all their packaging so they can only be used as a USPO box. I have seen people cut down their free boxes so that no logo shows. Still this is risky and I think a fine-able offense. There are enough free cartons out there. Just check liquor stores, paint stores, grocery stores to name a few for good strong cartons. Turn them inside out and voila! New box for you!

What a great idea! I'd never thought of this either and it sure is a wonderful solution for re-purposing cardboard boxes! Thanks ShadyGreenThumb for sharing this tip! Thumbs up

I've priced those, too. I would even have other uses for a hot-air gun. But instead I pick the old ones off, tear some of the cardboard under them, and/or plaster over old labels with new labels.

I also bring small corrugated boxes home from work, and use black Magic Marker to black out old markings. I'm very careful to hide any old bar-codes completely, and any fragment of an old address.

For bubble mailers, the shipping label I print from "PayPal" covers one side completely.

I recall seeing some postal regulation about not re-using old cartons where any printing is still visible, but if they can ship it once with "Newark Electronics" printed on the cardboard, I don't see how it hurts them any to ship it twice that way.

I save all boxes and then cut them down the sides to make them flat. I use them as a base for my garden paths, especially in the veggie gardens and cover the cardboard with weed barrier. If I don't get to laying down the weed barrier right away the cardboard at least temporarily keeps the weeds down even if it isn't elegant. In one garden I cover the cardboard with a thin layer of straw so it looks better. I don't care which side is up since it will eventually be covered anyway!

Maybe you could find tossed out USPO boxes and ship UPS, or FED-X.

Must be careful if reusing USPS boxes. Back when large Tyvek envelopes were being turned inside out and reused, the USPO started printing "Priority Mail" and such on the inside. The boxes are marked as well. When turned inside out, it is refused by the USPO, that is, if it is a Flat Rate box/envelope. IDK if UPS etc will take them either.
