I was recently given a bag full of iris rhyzomes by a co-worker. All I know about them is that they are bearded and they are white. I have a couple of questions as I have never grown iris before, although I have always admired them. Here we go!
1. What side of the house should I plant these on?
2. What sort of bed should I dig (soil, etc); I have red clay so will I need to build a raised bed?
3. What time of year should I plant these.

Hi Jamie, and welcome to our group! What Zone are you in?
First off It's a good time to plant them right now, so the timing is good.
Second, Iris need at least a half day of sun to do well. Full Sun is better unless you live where it's over 100 degrees a lot.
Third, It's always good to add compost to the soil, no matter what type you have. I would work up the soil some, and put the compost on top of your clay soil, and let the worms work it in. .Maybe someone who has clay soil would have other suggestions here. I have sandy soil.

After you plant them you will want to water them often the first few days or until you see that they have taken root. Then they don't require a lot of watering, unless you live in the desert.

Lastly, you can look forward to this group to convince you to get more and more until you are addicted like we are!

Thanks tveguy3. I am in zone 8, north central Texas. We do have 100+ degree days (unfortunately experiencing too many of them right now) so I guess I should place them on the East side of my house since that is the only place that gets shade in the afternoon when it is the steamiest.

There are many people in TX who grow irises. See if there is an iris society in your area, the co-worker is a member? & they can give TX advice.
