I came across an article about my new found adenium farm that locals may find useful, I wasn't aware that he breeds scented adenium, now I guess I have to go and buy at least one more, I also wasn't aware that there was such a thing as an adenium counsel and that he is a member. Hope you find this interesting.

It's hard to believe this 53-year-old man who works so gently with plants in his Southwest Ranches nursery can also be a pit bull of a lawyer who has lost only three of the hundreds of cases he has tried in 17 years.

His plant passion is the Adenium, or the desert rose. McKee is one of the few Adenium breeders in the United States and a founding member of the World Adenium Society.

"People love them because they have a personality," he says. "They have an almost animalistic quality in their twisted trunks and can be as heavily flowered as azaleas. But most of the people buy them for the base, not the flowers. They are like living sculpture. They seem like they want to come to life and walk away."

McKee's law speciality is toxic exposure and contamination cases caused by agricultural, environmental and chemical sources. He fights for people and companies who have been injured or harmed by defective or dangerous products.

"Someone once told me that I am the best of friends and the worst of enemies," he says, sitting on the patio of his second home that shares 2 1/2 acres with the nursery. (His eastside home is in Hollywood.) "I will give you the shirt off my back, but if I am wronged there will be payback. If a client is wronged, I make sure justice is done."

Kelly Hancock, a friend and law partner, describes McKee as "one of the best attorneys in chemical cases in the United States." Hancock has worked cases with him and has dined with McKee and his wife, Angie, at their home.

"He is a family man, a lawyer and a nurseryman, and in every area he has done extremely well," Hancock says.

McKee also has done well in his nursery, Lucky Sumo Adeniums.

Although Asians are considered to be in the forefront of developing Adeniums, Jesse Durko calls McKee one of the best breeders.

"He is a first-class grower. His main contribution is developing fragrance and doubles," says Durko, who operates his namesake collector nursery in Davie.

McKee is developing plants with blue flowers, dwarfs and fragrance. 'Sumo's Scentsation' has pink flowers and a baby powder smell. Some of his best reds include: 'Sumo's Smile,' 'Sumo Angie's Passion' and 'Angie's Sumo Sweetheart.' Multi-petaled flower cultivars include 'Amazing Thailand,' 'Black Ambassador' and 'Zeus.'

Hey! I'm back from entertaining company for two weeks. Boy, people can sure take up one's time!

HI, Jimbo!!

Lucky Sumo used to post in the Yahoo Adenium group, but one person insulted him and he left. I would love to be where he chats now-a-days. OBOY, I didn't know he's doing fragrance, I am too, sort of. I have a single white that is sweet most of the time. All the breeders are struggling for a blue. A rich yellow and orange haven't been done yet, either.

My plants have crowded the pinks off the deck into the driveway. I have to squeeze my way around the deck, and I almost can't turn my car around! Akkk! The good news is that I'm starting to really like pink, can you believe?. And I dropped my camera, it's on it's way to NYC for repair, booooooooo

Hey back at you Melissa, didn't some one once say that fish and guests stink after three days? Hilarious! If you google Lucky Sumo Sanctuary you should get his face book page and other stuff concerning him and his ability, I found him very impressive, not only for his talent as an adenium expert, but his willingness to take time to show me so much and for an attorney to also have degrees in horticulture is I think great. About your camera, have you checked out hock shops to buy another. With so many cell phones having cameras, I bet a used one would be less then having one repaired. I'm in the process of digging up so many adenium I grew from seed and thought they were "bottle" types only to find that under the earth were great caudexes. My intention was to throw them out, now I'm putting them in pots and putting the pots under the soil. In the soil because of my fear of pots blowing through some ones window if we get a hurricane or severe tropical storm, plus it's a pain to go out picking up pots that have blown over. It will also be much easier for me to raise them up once a year. Bob has many of his in what I would call an bonsai pot, very shallow. Do you know the trick for that? It's gotta have to do with trimming the roots. Whatever it is, I want to try it. Sorry for being so long winded but, hey, it's been a long time. Tell me if you find Bob's page.

Jim

I have a few plants in pot saucers. One is a arabicum that JT sent me a long time ago. fat fat fat little guy with skinny limbs that have tiny flowers most of the time. Gotta get a camera! We don't have anything near a hock shop here, only 45,000 poor people who use stuff until it's really finished. I found Bob's page, but he posts very little, like, July 30, 2012.

Long winded? Ha, you've never heard me in action!!! Talk is good!

When I saw some of his in shallow dishes, my only thought was that he must use crazy glue as a potting medium. How do you keep them from falling right out of the pot with the slightest of breezes? I don't know what yours look like, but his were tall!

Kirk, that 2nd pic you posted at the beginning of this thread is what I referee to as a bottle adenium, I grew many from seed,I didn't like the look, but on digging them out of the ground most have great caudexes, they were just hidden. I'm doing this post on my phone, I never knew I could do that! Jim

Jim, I think the bottle adenium would probably look best on one with long thin leaves more than the fat oval leaves but out of all of mine it's the only one with that look. I can dig it. I wish there was a grower in Houston that had as many as Lucky Sumo. Those were some nice pictures! I'm stuck driving 20 miles in any given direction through Houston traffic to try to find some good ones at some places that are known to carry a lot of varieties. And then try to catch them when they first come in before they're all sold. LOL

I just got a new phone so perhaps I'll have to try to post from it soon. Whistling

I'd make it a point to call first, you. Would be missing a lot if Bob wasn't there, all his staff are great, but Bob reminds me of what I think Wilfred ( remember ol Wilfred) would be like if I met him face to face. If you meet him mention ATP and assure him no one here would "insult " him. Jim,

We've been having cloudy, rainy, and only very slightly cooler temps this week but my Ploy Praky and Black Purple came into bloom again. So I thought I'd share a few extreme closeup shots for your viewing pleasure.

No. two is my favorite too Komodo, beautiful!! Today I made a trip to Lucky Sumo, I mentioned to one of the staff that I had a large adenium that I wanted to dig out of the ground and put in a pot, but was afraid of cutting the roots. The staff guys name is pronounced
Ha-V-Air, the Ha is as in Ha-Ha-Ha Hilarious! . I wouldn't attempt the Spanish spelling except to say it begins with a -J_. He told me to go home, dig up the plant and he would re-pot it free. Wow, what great folks. Anyway, here is the fruits of my and his labor. Darn, I can't find the pictures, I'll get back to ya all later after I calm down Grumbling

Well, I didn't do that correctly, but the top pic is when it was in the ground (duh)

The second is after tugging and yanking Hilarious! out of the ground so you can see the root system, I hosed it off because it was traveling to Lucky Sumo.

The third is how he re potted it not cutting any of the roots.

I took many more pictures but wow, I sure messed up where ever I put them. I ought to take computer lessons instead of playing with Adeniums.

This particular plant gets very few if any leafs, but many flowers, some pink some deep red. He didn't trim anything much to my surprise, just sort of wrapped the roots around and told me not to cut it down till I saw new growth, oh, and when I got home I had to use wire to hold it in the pot, rather unsightly, but it's just till the roots take hold.

That's a beauty, I love the twisting, turning caudex. I think once it gets set in the pot it is going to be a show stopper.

ps. His name is spelled Javier.

Thank you Jonna for the correct spelling, now I can list him on my phone properly. I sure regret taking Latin instead of Spanish a hundred years ago in high school. But then again as I recall I didn't have a choice. Javier told me he'd be happy to pot any other adenium I might dig up free of charge. but having watched him I think I'll do the others myself. He suggested I dig another, hose it off, and bring it in to find the proper pot; they have a great selection of beautiful pots with great drainage and tiny legs to hold the pot off the ground.I just love this place.
