Hello fellow brug lovers, I have to admit I'm a lurker in this forum, enjoying all the pictures of the blooms posted. I do grow a few brugs here in north GA, and I'm finally about to get some blooms.

The weather here has been crazy this summer, and we had the coolest June that I remember, with night time temps down into the 40's on some night, and it took some time for all of my tropical plants to start growing. We have also had the most rain that I remember in years.

This bed has Savoy Truffle, Angel's Sunflower, Fleming Island Rachel, and a noid pink in pots, with Klein Lady, and Angel's Honeymoon that came back from the ground for the second year in a row.

Fleming Island Rachel is in a pot this year. It did better when it was planted in the garden in 2012.

My noid id yellow brug, and it's buds. The plant in bloom is from 2011, when we had a very hot, dry summer, and it bloomed much earlier in the summer then.

Those are beautiful, healthy plants! I especially like Rachel. Ours are just starting to grow again, after weeks of temps over 100. It's a love/hate relationship that I have with these plants.

Love seeing blooms in your north Ga. Gardens. My gardens are about 60 miles south of you.

I have 2 new additions to my brug family. Today, I went to one of our local nurseries, Randy's Perennials, looking for variegated brugs. I got Snowbank and Sunset from there several years ago, that did not survive this past winter in the basement. They had no variegated plants, but I did find Charles Grimaldi, and M.K. Rawlings, which is the plant on the left with the blooms. How could I pass these up 😱😱 M. K. Rawlings opened up beautifully this evening. I'll have to get a better picture of it tomorrow.





The other plants continue to do well, and most have buds except FIR, and Angel's Sunflower. Everyone got fertilized, and sprayed with molasses and Epsom salt today.

MK Rawlings this morning, the bloom is more of a pale peach, and it's developed a nice faint scent.

I'll bet by tonight after dark that one flower will perfume the whole garden! Lovely.

Annette, i went to Randy's nursery this Friday, 30th looking for variegated brugs also. I bought snowbank from them but did not survive this winter.
They didn't have it except those you got, but found grafted double pink adenium plant and a plumeria.

Do you know what MK Rawlings stands for?? never heard of MK

Elaine, you are right, the scent from MK Rawlings was delightful last night.

Cora, Randy's only had 3 brugs, and I bought 2 of the 3. I did see the adenium by the front door, and they had a lot of un-named plumeria, but I didn't get one of those, the DH would have let me sleep in the garage if I brought home another plumie

I did find an interesting plant, there, a Candlebush Cassia that was on sale, I like the shape of the blooms.



I have no idea what the MK stands for, there was not much information about the plant when I searched it on the, but the blooms are lovely and have gotten darker through out the day.



I was disappointed to find 2 mature blooms that were about to open, on the ground today. Something nipped them off of the plant. I've place them in water to see if they'll still open.

The other brugs are coming along.

Savoy Truffle now has buds.

Angel's Honeymoon is well over 6', but is taking it's time sending out buds. Some of the tiny buds also keep falling off.



Michele Obama has finally Y'd and buds are forming nicely.



The yellow noid id is coming along, and the pink noid now has a bud as well.

Your brugs looks so healthy. Are they planted in the ground?

Klein Lady, Angel's Honeymoon, Michele Obama and the yellow NOID are, and they came back from the roots this year, the rest are in pots. I had Fleming Island Rachel in the ground last year, but I dug her up, and she's in a pot this year.

They definitely do better planted in the ground, and have better, faster growth. I'll have to find permanent sites in the garden for the potted plants next year.

Look at youuu!! You are a supper bloomer. I because addicted to them last year. I think many people here can say the same. All I can say is there are a lot of worse things I could have succumb to.

I agree, they do much better planted in the ground. I think what i am going to do is to cut them down and root it in the greenhouse for back up.
I'll just have to mulch them just in case our winter is nasty.

Cora, I have found that here in FL my brugs do better in pots. If you have nematodes in your soil (and most of us do) the brugs attract them like crazy. I had one that flourished for about 3 years and then went into a decline and died despite all my best TLC. When we pulled it out, sure enough the roots were all knotted up with nematodes.

So, I'd just caution you to first solarize (sun bake) the soil area where you are going to plant your brugs, and then amend the area heavily with compost. You will have to top dress generously with compost each year after that as well, because the organic material breaks down so fast in our hot, humid climate. The nematodes like the loose, sandy soil, but are deterred somewhat by soil that has a high percent of organic amendments.

Or invest in some big pots! I just prune my big ones back about halfway in winter so that I don't have to re-pot them too often.

Thank you for the advice Elaine. I have my brugs in 3- 5 gal pots and been dragging in and out of the basement every winter.

Wait, Cora your profile says S. Florida. You should not have to protect them from cold! Wait (again) you have a basement? In S. Florida??

Mine are outdoors all year 'round, and I occasionally throw a sheet or piece of frost cloth over them if it's getting down into the 30's. They stop blooming in winter for a while but never lose their leaves.

If I'm really energetic I'll move some of the smaller ones to the south side of the house where they actually keep blooming sometimes, too. I use a mover's dolly to move the big pots.
