How beautiful! Your property looks immense. I love the rocks around your flower beds, and the ice plant looks perfect there. That deck is a dream spot.

Teri, do you have a master plan worked out or are you just doing one area at a time and letting things happen? I like the casual look of everything and especially the vines and roses around the deck. Seems like a lot of the newer large homes around here end up with too much cookie cutter type professional landscaping. I like your look much better and it really softens the new home look. Keep us updated.

Funny you should ask that Susan. All the other homes in our cul de sac are professionally landscaped with lots of beautiful bushes and trees, all very neatly tucked in with black mulch. I always admire how neat they look even when things are winding down. As it turns out, I have a friends and family get together day at my house and the first year that our neighbors (all have jobs and are younger than us) were invited, they told us how wonderful it was for them to turn the corner into our street (we're on the corner) and see all the ever changing beautiful colors coming from our gardens.

We have a very loose plan, now and then, as to what to put in the gardens and even that keeps changing. My object is to fill every available spot with something. I'm running out of room.

Enjoyed looking at your gardens. It is so refreshing to see those in an addition filled with carefully landscaped and tended yards. The statement you just made sums up my gardening philosophy so well "We have a very loose plan" Love that!! I tip my hat to you.

Thanks Indy,

I usually start with one or two "bones" (maybe rosebush or potentilla etc.) then I start plugging in around them.

Me too. I am planning a new garden this year with sort of sunset colors. Got the idea from gemini sage. It willl start out small and each year maybe grow a little. That is the way I work; just add a few inches around all sides each year. That way my DH doesn't catch on quite so soon. lol

Oh, to have so much space to fill! Teri, I love the progress you have made... especially the look of the stone-lined beds. My favorite pic is the red roses peeping through the rails on the deck. That carefree look is so inviting, and with so much space you can let your plants grow happily without whacking them down to size too often! I hope you will post more throughout the year so we can watch the progress!

What glorious open spaces and color! You are doing such a splendid job with the whole thing. It just looks beautiful. I can see why your neighbors enjoy looking at it. I particularly like your use of the Ice plant. I had that and it went rampant on me and didn't look nearly as good in my garden. I took it out. Had it looked like yours, I would have loved it. I surely do envy you all the sunshine and open space.

Hi, Pixydish,

My iceplant really stays pretty much where it is put after the initial spread. It has such shallow roots that if it did spread here, which i wish it would. it wouldn't interfere with anything. It is also very short and, along with this low growing cover I use several different ones with the same habits to take the place of mulch.

Thanks, Jan and Ge.

I was really happy that you made it Jan and I hope that we'll see you again on the Saturday after Memorial Day. The get together was good for all of us, especially in your situation. Need to get out whenever you can.
