Wow, Sandi you just solved my problem on what to do with my young seedlings while I'm gone. I started them with Winter Sowing milk jugs. They have all taken off just in time to pot up (to cold yet to put in ground). My problem is where to put them to keep them safe. This will work. Thank you so much for solving my problem.

Great info Sandi. The 1st year that I had a indoor seed starting lights & shelves was very exciting. I packed the seed starting trays in, with not an extra square inch. About a month before our average last frost, I had a bad situation. All the seedlings needed to be transplanted into bigger pots and I ran out of space indoors, under lights. My solution was: convert the kid's swingset into a temporary greenhouse. I bought vapor plastic and landscape ties from Home Depot and it worked out great. I used a little propane tent heater at night. All for under $50. It held up fine through a couple of snowfalls too. The next year, I got a hobby greenhouse.

That just gave me an idea on how I could overwinter my tender succulents. I could put that plastic over hoops placed in the cinder block raised beds. It would be a mini version of what you did in the above post. I could even place the frost protecting fabric over it during the really cold weather.

Love the idea of re-purposing a swing set, Joanne, and finding a spot to store the picnic table too! DH and I wonder if you possibly took a few minutes on that glider to admire all your seedlings?! You put a lot of work into your lovely garden and it shows. I enjoy your garden photos.

We are. I took all the plumerias out of the garage today. It was 82 degrees at 5 PM! Supposed to rain tonight, but I don't think we'll get much. I'm not taking down the greenhouses out back just yet. Mother Nature like to play games with us until early April!

I am having growing season envy. It is back to low 30's at night, cloudy with a breeze and mid 40's during the day.
Just came in, it's trying to rain. I so want to work out in the yard.

Well, in July, remember that we'll be hiding inside because it'll be at least 100 during the days. When I look back at photos of the garden 5 years ago, I see plants that couldn't make it through the heat and have disappeared. We probably could have made it through the winter without covering plants this winter. It stayed fairly warm. I can only remember a couple of nights when it froze here, and that was just mild freezes.

Okay, I no longer have growing zone envy. : )
It has been a very mild winter here also. But we did have about two weeks of low 20's. No snow. Just cold and frozen.

If it snows here, all the schools close and they have to close the overpasses. Most of us don't know how to drive in it or on it! Guess I'll take the heat for now, but I would like some rain!!!

We are suppose to get rain again later this week.

I have a very good friend who lives in Harbor, OR. She loves to tell me about her cool weather all the time. I remind her that I can see the sun. We humans are very adaptable!

How silly I feel, sitting here laughing all by myself.
It's just the winter and spring months that we don't see much sun. the other half of the year there is lots of sun.

Oh I see where that is. Bet she gets a lot of fog? That is way down south and on the coast from me.

I do hang out in my greenhouse that I have now. Even have a little folding chair in there. The days are still too short to start it up, but should get it up and running in about 2 weeks. By then we will be at 11 hour days.

It's been quite mild temps here. We went up to our farm in NE Alberta on the weekend. Forgot to put new batteries in the thermostat and the worst happened. The furnace did not come on since the stat was not functioning. We will have some plumbing repairs. Also, there was such a big wind, it blew the front door open. I had a stack of chair in front of it, so it was only opened about an inch. The wind storm was in October and it has been near -40º. Fortunately the screen door kept the snow out. I am not looking forward to the heating bill.

Oh brrrrrr. So glad it was only the plumbing. No bears, etc using it.
