Welcome to my Garden!

There's quite a story to this property. I'm a General Contractor and I just love building homes. When I built my previous home about 10 years ago, I was sure it was going to be the last one! But never say never!

When I first came here from Canada over 30 years ago I had no idea what I was doing or where I was going! The 2nd day after I arrived, I was invited over to some friends home and on the way there I got lost! I remember being at the dead end of a street and looking over and seeing the most incredible and tranquil sight. I just had to stop. It was something magical - a beautiful pond, with a little waterfall, incredible natural vegetation and a couple fellows peacefully fishing off the bank.

For 25 years this vision was so imbedded in my mind but I had never came across it again. There were actually times I thought my mind might have been playing tricks on me but later resigned myself to the fact that somebody had probably built a house and was blocking it.

Well, about 6 years ago I was checking out some property for a client wanting to build a home. It was in an area that I hadn't been to for a while. After finishing up the site visit, I turned the corner of the street and LOW and BEHOLD...there it was!!! Not only that...There was a For-sale sign as a local developer had just developed the property. I think it took me about 10 minutes to get back to my office and make the call. And, they just happened to have 2 lots left! There was just no hesitation at the time and I just happened to have plans of a "dream" house I had designed 15 years previous that I never ended up using.

It took me 3 years to build this home, as everything that could go wrong....did! We went through 2 hurricanes (one very major) and it seemed I had to do everything twice. It was very frustrating and at times I thought it may have been a bad decision! However, things change when the dust settles and I couldn't be happier.

I've lived here for just over 3 years now and it's been so exciting having a blank canvas to work on. I have about an acre and a half and it's a lot of garden. I have so many dreams and wish lists but it all takes time and money. Right now I do a little bit at a time.

The most appropriate name I could come up with for this home was "Casa Karma"...because I truly believe I was meant to be here! For this, I am a very fortunate soul.

These photos range over 3 years and I had so many I wanted to share that I put them on my Phanfare site (it's very secure). I would also appreciate any ideas that I could add to the wish list!

Take care

Okay...I have to mention!

Not everything is idealic in the garden these days! We've had several freezes this year (so unusual) and it's not looking good. I still haven't trimmed back things as it's still iffy as far as temps go. Some is going to have to be replaced but I think most of it will come back.

Note to self: Do not push the zones!

Kat, thank you for giving us a glimpse of your garden! I hope you will post more photos of the recovery process after this ridiculously cold Southern winter. We had a snow/sleet mix again this morning here in Southern Louisiana. So, I don't think there is a way to push the zones anymore... if I plant those plants for my zone, the hard freezes wipe them out. If I plant those plants hardy for cooler zones, the summer heat wipes them out. I think my entire gardening philosophy is going to have to change now with all these recent years rewriting our "typical" weather!

I would love too see and read about your strategies as you reclaim and revive your gardens this year.

Kat, I am awestruck! What a wonderful paradise you live in. Did you say you are looking for a roommate? Dog walker? Plant waterer? Lizard Lounge cleaner? I'll volunteer if you'll support me. My favorite thing of all is the Muhly Grass. And the night time shots are fantastic. A true tropical paradise and what an interesting story to go with it. Thanks for brightening my day.
